Secunderabad:  With the commissioning of the an escalators on Platform No.4 and 5,  the seventh in the station and of two lifts, one each on Platform No.1 and 10 in the second week of August, Secunderabad has emerged as the first railway station in the country to be equipped with escalators on all its 10 platforms and lifts on the main platforms at the station’s both entrances.

The South Central Railway has spent Rs 6.60 crore on the seven escalators, civil engineering works, electrical power supply and other arrangements.

The two lifts have cost the SCR about Rs 98 lakh. Each lift has the capacity to carry 20 persons at a time. Each escalator can carry 180 persons per minute. It is estimated that around 43,000 passengers use escalators on any given day.

Escalators and lifts not only facilitate easy and quick movement of passengers but have also proven to be a boon to the elderly, sick and physically challenged.

Tiruchirapalli: The Goldenrock Workshops (GOC) of the Southern Railway has fetched order for constructing 1,000 BLC wagons from CONCOR, said the Chief Workshop Manager (CWM), P.Mahesh.

The Wagon Wing of the GOC had manufactured and despatched 560 BLC-type wagons against an order of 600 and has also completed manufacturing 300 numbers of BOXN HL wagon. The next orders for 320 wagons have just been received, Mr.Mahesh said speaking at the Independence Day celebrations here on Thursday. He said that for the first time in the country, the GOC is privileged to build 50 numbers of BTFLN (bogie tank wagon without frame) and the prototype trials are on in 4 wagons. Mr.Mahesh said that against the target of 99 diesel locomotives, the workshop has completed 136 locomotives POH, which includes supply to RITES and select PSUs. During current fiscal, against the target of 111 locos the workshop has so far completed 35 locos. So far, we have converted 15 MG surplus locos as BG shunting locos for various divisional demands.

Four MG locos were refurbished and exported to Myanmar last year. Similarly two MG engine blocks were reconditioned and exported to Mozambique. Cylinder Liner Plating Shop crossed 11,500 liners, engine block shop reconditioned 135 blocks, HERS shop attended 322 units and CMS shop completed coil rewinding in 280 set of coils last year to cross the individual set targets. Referring to the functioning of the Carriage Wing, Mr.Mahesh said that this branch has crossed various milestones this year.

With respect to AC coach POH, it has completed 97 coaches so far against the last year completion of 67 coaches during the same period. To meet the demand of tourists in world heritage site at Udhagamandalam, nine NMR coaches were given POH and dispatched.

The Production Wing built three oil-fired steam locomotives to help Nilgiri Mountain Railway to serve tourists without interruption. During the last fiscal, the Wheel Shop has turned out 8,157 wheels to meet shop and divisional needs.

Referring to the other areas, Mr.Mahesh said that the Electrical Branch has introduced various energy conservation methods to ensure optimum uninterrupted power supply. By introducing regenerative battery chargers, considerable recycling of power has been effected in the battery section. The workshop has also introduced various industrial safety measures, and the safety standards have been enhanced.

Mr.Mahesh hoisted the national flag and gave away rewards to outstanding employees.

NAGPUR :The Central Railway Mazdoor Sangh (CRMS) was successful in attaining their goal of stopping the incorrect absorption of 37 new employees taken in through the Railway Recruitment Cell ( RRC). According to CRMS, the personnel department of the railways was about to post the 37 new recruits as safaaiwalas, instead of their original post in the mechanical branch of the railways. Some of the recruits approached CRMS and they took up the matter with the authorities.In a letter, CRMS divisional secretary Vinod Chaturvedi said that the union first tried to solve the matter through petitions and letters. But when the authorities didn't seem to pay any heed, they decided to launch an agitation. CRMS decided to launch a dharna. But before that, the railway authorities agreed to the demands and gave it in writing that the new recruits will be posted in their rightful posts.

New Delhi: A goods train carrying coal derailed near Ulna Bhari station in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, disrupting movement of trains on Delhi-Howrah main rail route.The Ayodhya-bound goods train derailed at 12.37 PM this afternoon between Ulna Bhari-Bilhar Ghat stations on Barabanki-Zafarabad section of Lucknow Division, said a senior Northern Railway official. Eight coal wagons derailed and as a result movement of rail traffic has been suspended temporarily as the mainline section has been blocked. The official said Accident Relief Trains (ART) from Faizabad, Lucknow and Mughalsarai stations have already been pressed into service to restore the blocked section. Senior railway officials are supervising the restoration work for an early start of normal train movement on the affected section, he said. While Varanasi-Ayodhya-Gonda Intercity Express was cancelled, several trains have been diverted due to the derailment. The train which are being diverted from their usual routes include Howrah-Kotdwar Doon Express, Delhi-Malda Town Farrakha Express, Ferozpur Cantt-Dhanbad Ganga Sutlej Express, Surat-Muzaffarpur Express, Jammu Tawi-Kolkata Sealdah Express, Farrukhabad-Chhapra Express, Darbhanga-Ahmedabad Sabarmati Express, Patna-Kota Express, Faizabad-Delhi Kaifiyat Express and Varanasi-Jodhpur Marudhar Express.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today exuded confidence that the ambitious Lucknow Metro Rail project, to ease traffic and transportation problem of the state capital, would start in time.On the occasion of the release of 'Development Agenda of UP 2013-2014', the chief minister said, "After the Lucknow project, which is a priority of the state government, projects for other cities would be taken up."Yadav, who was presented the model of the proposed project, also said the funds for the extension of metro in Ghaziabad has been arranged.Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Planning department Sadakant said details of the project were being worked out diligently so that the first phase of the Rs 6,757 crore project could be started by the targeted date of December, 2013.All efforts are being made to obtain necessary approvals and financial sanction from the Centre, he said, adding that operations are expected to commence in December, 2016.A modified Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been approved by the high-powered committee headed by the Chief Secretary, Sadakant said.The constitution of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is underway with the memorandum and articles of the association having been prepared, he said.To expedite the work, an interim consultant is required to prepare detailed designs for which two specialist agencies -- RITES and DMRC -- have been asked to submit proposals, the Principal Secretary said, adding that the interim consultant would be selected by the end of this month.

DMRC is working on the depot design for north-south corridor of the first phase, he said.

The underground portion of the north-south corridor had been reduced from 7.5 km to approximately 3.5 km from Charbagh to Hazratganj, Sadakant said, adding that 22 stations are proposed in the first phase, out of which 3 stations are underground and 19 elevated.

An estimated 6.45 lakh passengers will use this corridor in the year 2020. The peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) of this corridor is estimated to be 20,976 in 2020.

One rake would consist of six coaches with a passenger carrying capacity of 1,574. Initially, the train will run at an interval of 7 to 14 minutes but with the increase in traffic, the interval will be reduced to 2 to 4 minutes.

Thrissur: The Railways announcement to run an express train service between Punalur and Guruvayur via Kottayam-Chengannur has been welcomed by all. At present, there’s no service between the two destinations.

The two express trains starting from Guruvayur, the Guruvayur-Thiruvanathapuram Intercity Express and the Guruvayur-Chennai Egmore Express, have been running via Alappuzha and these trains are packed during the peak season.

Following the continuous demand of commuters, a new train was announced between Guruvayur and Punalur in the railway budget, much to their delight.

Commuters also urged the railway authorities to sanction stops for the new train at Punkunnam, Puthukkad, Irinjalakuda, Angamali and Aluva stations.

This would be of great service to passengers and pilgrims, said P. Krishnakumar, general secretary of the Thrissur Railway Passengers Association.

But the announcement came as a little disappointment to rail users in Thrissur as the service that has been proposed to run through the route, is likely to disturb the timings of two passenger trains starting from Ernakulam and Thrissur to Guruvayur in the evening.
