डीजल की बढ़ती कीमतों को देखते हुए रेलवे ने ईँधन बचाने की नई तरकीब अपनाने का फैसला किया है। इसके तहत ट्रेनों में ऐसे इंजन लगाए जाएंगे जिनमें एक बड़े जेनसेट के बजाय तीन छोटे-छोटे जेनसेट होंगे।
रेल मंत्रालय के प्रवक्ता के अनुसार अभी ज्यादातर ट्रेनों में 2500 से 3000 हार्सपावर के डीजल जेनसेटों का इस्तेमाल होता है। इन्हें ज्यादातर समय चालू अवस्था में रखना पड़ता है, चाहे ट्रेन चल रही हो या खड़ी हो। इससे ईधन की बर्बादी के अलावा प्रदूषण में भी इजाफा होता है। जिस तरह डीजल के दाम बढ़ रहे हैं, उसे देखते हुए ईधन बचाना समय की मांग है। वहीं, ग्लोबल वार्मिग रोकने के लिए कार्बन उत्सर्जन घटाना भी जरूरी है। इसीलिए रेलवे के इंजीनियरों ने ऐसे इंजनों का विकास शुरू किया है जिनमें कम क्षमता के जेनसेट होंगे। इस तरह के कम से कम तीन जेनसेट वाले इंजन लगाकर ट्रेनें चलाई जाएंगी। जब ट्रेन पूरा लोड लेकर चलेगी तो तीनों जेनसेट चालू रहेंगे। जब खाली चलेगी तो दो से काम चलाया जाएगा। इसी तरह जब ट्रेन खड़ी होगी तो केवल एक जेनसेट चालू रहेगा। इस तरह 2400 हार्सपावर वाले एक इंजन की जगह 800 हार्सपावर (प्रत्येक क्षमता) के तीन इंजन लगाए जाएंगे।
इस तरह के इंजनों का विकास पटियाला स्थित डीजल लोको मॉडर्नाइजेशन वर्कशॉप में किया गया है। पश्चिम रेलवे के भोपाल डिवीजन के इटारसी में इसका ट्रायल हो रहा है। विकसित देशों में इस तरह के इंजनों का पहले से इस्तेमाल हो रहा है। अमेरिका में मध्यम क्षमता श्रेणी के 500 मल्टी जेनसेट रेल इंजन इस्तेमाल हो रहे हैं। वहां बॉम्बार्डियर कंपनी इनका निर्माण करती है। इन दिनों वह जर्मन स्टेट रेलवे के लिए ऐसे 200 इंजनों का निर्माण कर रही है।
इस तरकीब से रेलवे को 20 फीसद ईधन की बचत होने की उम्मीद है। फिलहाल रेलवे हर साल 250 करोड़ लीटर डीजल का इस्तेमाल करती है। इन इंजनों के प्रयोग से वह 50 करोड़ लीटर तक डीजल बचा सकती है।

Mangalore : A demand for a separate Railway Division for Mangalore was heard at the joint meeting of the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Udupi District Railway Yatri Sangha held at KCCI Meeting Hall here on August 21, Wednesday. The meeting also discussed the various demands pertaining to railways of the region. RL Dayas, President of the Sangha said the elected representatives of the region have never been vociferous enough as the Kerala leaders in pressurizing the government to fulfill the railway demands of the region. He also stated that had they been determined, then several of the demands would have been fulfilled. The meeting urged the  government to  provide stops for the Mangalore Madagaon inter-city express train at Byndoor, Udupi, Kundapur, Suratkal, Ankola, Honnavar, Kumta and Bhatkal. A stop was also urged for the CSTM-Mangalore Super Fast train at Dadar. Steps were also requested to have a Bangalore-Mangalore train via Hassan at the earliest. It was also decided to submit appeals to the Railway Minister and the officials concerned in this regard.

HARYANA: Union Minister of State for Railways Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury today said Rs 2,200 crore would be spent on construction of the Rail Coach Factory at Sonipat in the state.

The annual manufacturing capacity of the factory would be 1,000 coaches, but initially it would manufacture 400 coaches in a year, he said, lauding Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for providing 400 acres of land for the factory.

Expressing regret about loss of life in rail accidents, Chowdhury said the entire department feels extremely pained and hurt due to the incidents like the one in Bihar.

However, he said, it is no fault of Railways and that people should not violate rules and cross railway tracks.

"Railways could lay tracks across the country, run trains on it and provide better facilities to passengers, but maintaining law and order is the responsibility of state governments concerned," he said, according to an official release.

The Minister said half of the expenses incurred for deputing police force by the state governments for maintaining law and order are borne by the Centre.

Appealing to the people to always use over bridges for crossing rail tracks, the Minister said, "Sufficient security arrangements even on small stations are our responsibility, but cooperation from the state government is needed to maintain such arrangements."

The 1.6 km-long pedestrian skywalk proposed on the Poonamallee High Road connecting Chennai Central is now before the Heritage Conservation Committee for clearance.

CMDA sources said the skywalk, which would help connect pedestrians to more than 10 different points including Chennai Central, Moore Market Complex, Madras Medical College, Southern Railway head quarters and Government General Hospital, would be inspected by the Heritage Conservation committee on Tuesday before deciding to give a green light to the proposal.

Interestingly, the proposal has already got the nod of Southern Railways. Sources said the proposal would ease the movement of pedestrians in the crowded stretch.

The decision was taken during the heritage Conservation Committee meeting held here on Wednesday, they said.

The Heritage Conservation Committee also overruled the objections over the first draft list of 67 sites. “There were two objections which were overruled,” sources said.

Interestingly, this means that the Southern Railways’ plan to tear down more than the century-old Royapuram Railway station is now unlikely to fructify.

Built in 1856 during the colonial era by the then Madras Railway Company, Royapuram was the first station that initiated railway services in South India. The list prepared by CMDA has described it as Grade-1 heritage structure.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) on Tuesday sent a letter to the general manager of the Western Railway (WR) asking them to put up CCTV cameras at strategic points covering the entire platform at all stations.

The move came after the lone camera — at the Borivli end of platform number 1 at Marine Lines — failed to cover the attacker entering the first class coach in which 24-yearold US national Michelle Mark was targeted.

GRP officials said that only one uni-directional camera was seen near the women’s coach that the unidentified person entered, but the camera was turned towards its right to focus on the entry and exit points of the platform.

“GRP personnel are generally deployed near the foot over bridges and the entry/exit points. Even on the day of the incident, our staff was at the Churchgate end of the platform. If the camera would have covered the attacker, there would have been better clarity on his looks,” said Eknath Jadhav, senior inspector of Churchgate GRP.

Meanwhile, officials detained two persons from Tardeo and were interrogating them.

The police added that they had rounded up over 20 others for questioning, but let them off earlier in the day.

Police said they are mainly covering pockets of Grant Road, Tardeo and Mumbai Central, areas frequented by drug addicts. (HT)

NAGPUR: The Railways have decided to introduce a new weekly express train between Sainagar Shirdi and Puri via Nagpur.

Accordingly, train number 18407 will depart on every Friday (from Aug 18) from Puri at 10.15 pm and arrive at Nagpur on Saturdays at 7.40 pm, Badnera at 10.40 pm and reach Sainagar Shirdi on third day (Sundays) at 8.25 am.

Similarly, 18408 will leave Sainagar Shirdi at 1 pm on every Sunday and arrive Badnera at 10.20 pm (same day) and Nagpur at 1.40 am (Mondays) and reach Puri at 11 pm the same day, according to a release issued by the Nagpur division of Central Railway.

The train will halt at Khurda Road, Bhuvneshwar, Dhenksal, Talchar, Angul, Brinda, Sambhalpur, Bolangir, Titlagarh, Kantabhansi, Mahasamund, Raipur, Durg, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Badnera, Akola, Bhusaval, Manmad and Kopargaon.

The train will have 22 coaches, including one AC2, three AC3, nine SL, six unreserved, one pantry car and two SLR, the release added.

Madras High Court today dismissed a petition which falsely claimed a land actually belonging to the Railways and imposed a cost of Rs 50,000.

Justice K K Sasidharan, who passed the order on a petition filed by P Arunodayam and N Kasturi, said they were rank trespassers in respect of the land claimed by them and dismissed the petition and further directed them to pay cost to the Railways before September 30.

The case related to a land in Villivakkam, which was acquired by the government for Railways vide a notification dated January 22, 1958. But the petitioners have produced a sale deed dated December 1, 1995 executed by one C Narayanasamy in favour of their mother.

The document was bereft of details as to how the seller got this property. The petitioners obtained patta for the land in question, which was issued without giving any notice to Railways which was already acquired for it.

He further said the claim of the petitioners was found to be wrong by the documents produced by Railways.

The Judge also said the writ petition was clearly misconceived. On the issue of Patta the judge said the predecessor-in-interest of the petitioners succeeded in getting the patta on account of the Assistance given by the revenue officials and the greedy officials of Tamil Nadu Housing Board.

The Judge said the petitioners unnecessarily dragged the Railways to litigation and dismissed the petition with cost.
