WR UNDERTAKES BLOCK FOR CC APRON WORK AT MUMBAI CENTRAL (MAIN LINE)


            Western Railway will undertake 60 days Block from 8.00hrs from 11.9.2013 at Mumbai Central Platform No 1 for repairs of CC Apron etc. The block will be for a period of 60 days from 11.09.2013 to 9.11.2013. Due to this work, the following trains will be short terminated during this period:

1.59442 Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central Passenger will be terminated at Dadar o­n PF No. 5 at 04.05 hrs. Due to this 12928 to be delayed for about 10" to 15" minutes.

2.12902 Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Gujarat mail will be terminated at Dadar o­n PF No. 6 at 06.00 hrs.

3.19012 Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central Gujarat Express will be terminated at Dadar o­n PF No. 5at 16.00 hrs.     

4.19024 Firozpur Janata Express will be terminated at Dadar.



            Passengers are requested to please take note of the above changes.

Indian Railways developed a fire and smoke detection system on all the coaches for the safety of the passengers.

Primary features of the safety systems

• The system is capable for checking and giving alarm to passenger during initial stages of fire, thereby giving valuable time for shifting to safe areas and evacuation. • The automatic fire and smoke detection system as tried out is based on Very Early Warning Smoke Detection System (VEWSD) strategy to detect smoke/fire at incipient stage of smoke, fire through continuous multipoint sampling and analysis of coach environment. • The system is suitable for controlled environment i.e. for AC coaches only. • There are 4 alarm levels called as Alert, Action, Fire-1 and Fire-2.

• The system as of now is subjected to trials on Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani. During trial period, two actual fire incidences were detected by the system in two coaches of Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani and timely warning saved loss of property and life.

• The system has been installed by the Rail Coach Factory on one more rake of LHB Rajdhani dispatched to Northern Railway, which will be used to run 12454/12453, New Delhi Ranchi Rajdhani train.

Research Design & Standards Organisation (RDSO), a research wing of the Ministry of Railways, based on the feedback, has also made improvements on specification. At the same time, provision of interfacing the system with the air brake system of the coaches has also been made. This would help in the event of Fire-2 alarm; train gets stopped before hooter is sounded.

This system would help that passenger can safely get down without panic. The system of Bhubaneshwar Rajdhani is also planned to be fitted on more rakes in the current year.

A major fire was averted today on a freight train carrying approximately 1000 tonnes of coal to a thermal unit in Mettur from here, officials said.

They said a gangman noticed columns of smoke billowing out of a wagon when the train was passing Kambatham village in Vellore district this afternoon.

He immediately alerted officials in nearby Latheri and Katpadi railway stations, who in turn informed the Fire and Rescue Services Department.

Firefighters fought for two hours to douse the flames after ensuring the blaze did not spread to other wagons, A Annasamy, Katpadi Fire Station Officer, said.

Power supply to overhead cables above the rails was shut down before the fire tenders began their operation.

There were a total of 40 wagons, each carrying approximately 25 tons of coal.

On the likely cause of the fire, G Elango, District Fire Officer, Vellore, said it was being looked into.

"It is likely that it was due to self-ignition. Coal has a propensity to self-ignite," he said.

Officials were relieved as loss of coal in a fire would also have meant obstacles in power production in Mettur.

CHENNAI: Pattaravakkam railway station near Ambattur on the Chennai Central-Tiruvallur section last week.Police are looking for a cattle owner after a group of seven buffaloes crossing the railway tracks was allegedly struck by a train at Pattaravakkam railway station near Ambattur on the Chennai Central-Tiruvallur section last week.

Dawn Williams, general manager of Blue Cross of India (Chennai), said the accident occurred at 11am on August 24. "Four buffaloes were killed. One was mowed down, three were thrown into an adjoining drain and drowned. One escaped unhurt," he said. Two injured buffaloes were slaughtered by butchers before they could be rescued, Blue Cross volunteers said.

Williams said any animal injured on a railway track is the property of railways and cannot be slaughtered.

The FIR registered by the Perambur Government Railway Police, based on a complaint lodged by Blue Cross volunteers, mentions that a Tata Ace (registration number TN09BR3042) was used to carry away the meat and that the waste lay strewn all over the tracks. The train driver did not inform the authorities at the next station about the accident, the complaint said. Three buffalo carcasses were found in the drain on railway premises.

Chennai Corporation employee Sughinya, who along with two others removed the dead buffaloes from the drain, said an earthmover was used for the task. "The councillor of the area asked us to clear the drain as the animals had begun rotting," he said. However, he did not confirm the details of the accident.

A Palaniappan, sub-inspector, GRP, Perambur, expressed doubts over the Blue Cross version. "It is possible that the herd was crossing the tracks and would have jumped in the drain on seeing the approaching train. If the train ran over a buffalo, the body would have got entangled in the train's wheels. We are trying to find out if the train actually hit the animals," he said.

He said a case was registered under IPC Section 289 (negligent conduct with respect to animals) and that they were trying to trace the cattle owner.

NEW DELHI: Gyanodaya Express chugged out of Safdarjung railway station on Monday, carrying 900 students on the third such educational trip organized by the Delhi University. This time, it's heading to Punjab. This is the first time, 150 students from Edinburgh and London will be on what DU authorities call the "College on Wheels."

Flagged off by the MoS railways, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the trip will last till September 8. But it's the 'code of conduct' students are expected to adhere to for the duration of the trip that has drawn the most attention. "Students are to strictly adhere to the dress code i.e. girls are not to wear skirts, shorts or spaghetti (sic) and boys are also not to wear shorts and sleeveless T-shirts," it says.

NEW DELHI: After a long delay, the railways has finally fast-tracked the process for setting up an electric locomotive plant at Madhepura in Bihar.
The state-run transporter has received bids from six global infrastructure firms -- Siemens, Alstom, Bombardier, GE, CSR Corporationand CNR Corporation from China -- for the Rs 1,293 crore project. The factory will manufacture around 800 electric engines of 12,000 horsepower (HP) over 10 years.
An official said the railways is expected to announce the names of shortlisted companies for the project within a fortnight.
The fresh request for qualification (RFQ) for the projects was issued in May after it was cleared by the Cabinet. Officials are expecting that the projects will be awarded by January, the deadline set by the PMO.
The project, part of the prime minister's ambitious Rs 1 lakh crore investment target in the current fiscal, is being monitored by the top UPA leadership.
Fast-tracking the project is seen as a desperate move by the cash-strapped railways to send a positive signal to private investors and an attempt at image correction after bad publicity in the "cash-for-promotion" scam.
The project was announced in 2006-07 during the tenure of Lalu Prasadas railway minister along with the proposal to set up a Rs 1,300 crore diesel locomotive factory at Marhowra. The projects were to be set up in partnership with private players, with the railways holding 26% stake in each.
The projects failed to take off as allegations of favouritism towards certain private players cropped up. Other contentious issues between railways and private players were technology transfer, assured buying of locomotives and duration of maintenance of locos by the companies.
