Activists of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) staged a protest here on Wednesday demanding that the Union and State governments fill vacant posts in their departments.Raising slogans such as “Give us employment, or give us unemployment allowance” they gathered in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office. Addressing the activists, Muneer Katipalla, president of the district unit of DYFI, accused the Union and State governments of reneging on their promises and of showing apathy towards the unemployed youth.“Even with postgraduate degrees, people do not get jobs. There are 15 lakh vacancies in various departments of the Union government and 1.8 lakh in the State government. Steps have not been taken to fill them. Many qualified youths have applied for three lakh posts in the Indian Railways. Many are losing opportunities as the retirement age has been increased,” he said. The protest was part of the agitation scheduled to culminate in a procession to the Vidhana Soudha in February. |
