The West Bengal power system returned to normal and there were no major power cuts in the State on Wednesday, a day after the collapse of the power system in North India ensnared the eastern grid too.Sources in the power sector said supply resumed from late Tuesday evening with restoration of power in hospitals and railways.By midnight, the system was restored. The 900-MW Purulia Pumped Storage, which functions as a hydel project once water is pumped up to it at Ayodhya Hills, is performing to capacity.State Power Department officials said that barring a unit at the Bandel Thermal Power Station, all units were restored on Wednesday. Generation in the evening peak hour is about 4350 MW and 495 MW has been exported to CESC and 60 MW to state utility Durgapur Power Ltd.The CESC serves the city and its vicinity. CESC, which was successfully able to isolate itself from the system, had not only saved the city from the collapse largely but also provided start-up power for the State utilities. |
