The Salem District Handloom Textiles Merchants Association has urged the Salem Railway Division authorities to take concerted efforts immediately to introduce a day express train between Chennai and Salem.At its Mahasabha meeting held recently here and presided over by president Arunachalam and secretary Tirugnanasambandam, the textile traders’ forum said that a day train was essential for the public of a city such as Salem and also urged the Salem Railway Division to operate trains to various places from Salem Junction. It urged the Railway Ministry not to take any hasty steps to bring Salem Division under Thiruvananthapuram zone.The sabha also wanted the Salem Corporation to complete the Ananda bridge immediately.Encroachments in important streets in the city should be removed. The roadside vegetable market near Vasavai Mahal should be removed and encroachments in front of business establishments in Agraharam streets, Bazaar Street and Silk Bazaar also must be removed. The works on three rail overbridges also should be expedited.
