Mumbai: Six years after the serial train blasts rocked the city and claimed 187 lives, the trial in the case has finally entered the final stage with the court recording the statements of the defence witnesses. On Monday the defence presented two witnesses and corroborated the information procured by the accused through the Right to Information Act.This information was earlier used by the defence to present their case before the court. Defence advocate Sharif Sheikh said, "The defence has submitted a list of about 40 witnesses. The defence witnesses followed after the accused submitted their written statements under section 313 of the CrPC. In their statements the accused claimed they were innocent. They also told the court that their confession statements were fabricated and they were falsely implicated in the case.The court had earlier recorded the statements of 188 prosecution witnesses out of which four turned hostile. One-hundred-and-eighty-seven people were killed and over 800 injured after seven blasts occurred in the first class compartments of suburban local trains on July 11, 2006. In a span of eights minutes bombs ripped apart train compartments at Khar road, Bandra, Jogeshwari, Mahim, Borivli, Matunga and Mira-Bhayander. |
