Major accident averted when power car of train number 22476 Coimbatore – Bikaner Express caught fire near Karwar railway station. The train was about to reach Karwar railway station at 7:15AM Sunday morning, behind its schedule due to doubling work in neighbouring Dakshina Kannada. The driver noticed smoke in the front power car while passing through tunnel. The station was 1km away from the spot when driver informed about the trouble to station master and kept creeping the trains slowly towards the stations. Once train was at station, passengers were evacuated and the first three bogies were separated from the engine. Fire engines waiting at the station immediately brought the fire under control. No loss of life or property reported during the incident; however an inquiry has been ordered. According to passengers, they were fortunate as fire occurs during the day when train was near the station. Had it been night with train running at higher speed; any major tragedy would have been possible. |
