New Delhi: Atleast 35 passengers were killed and 25 injured after a coach of the Delhi-bound Tamil Nadu Express caught fire on Monday due to a short circuit near the toilet in a sleeper coach, media reports state. Addressing a press meet, Railway Minister Mukul Roy said that he has ordered a probe into the incident.He assured that the train services on the route have been restored.Reports said, the deputy station master of Nellore station reportedly noticed the fire in the S-11 (Sleeper) coach of the train and brought it to a halt. Passengers were evacuated immediately.Confirming the reports Railway PRO Anil Saxena said that the Nellore train accident occurred at 4:22 am, S11 bogey caught fire. Anil announced that the kin of dead will get Rs5 lakh as compensation and the injured will get Rs1 lakh each.Condoling the deaths in the railway accident, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh asked the Railway Ministry to coordinate relief work with the state government.According to Nellore District Collector Sridhar, the fire was caused due to short circuit near the toilet of the train. The injured have been taken to the Nellore civic hospital.Meanwhile, a special train carrying relatives of the victims will leave for Nellore from Chennai in a short while. |
