BANGALORE, NOV. 4:  South Western Railway (SWR) will focus on improving infrastructure and line capacity in various sections.

“In the current financial year, 41.5 km of new Railway lines, 27 km of gauge conversion and 44 km of doublings is targeted for completion,” said Ashok Kumar Mital, General Manager, South Western Railway (SWR).

Out of this, work on the 11.5 km new line between Kannivehalli-Chikmagalur, (part of the Kadur-Chikmagalur Railway line project), seven km of doubling between Channapatna-Settihalli, (part of Bangalore-Mysore Doubling project) and 27 km of gauge conversion between Chintamani-Siddlaghatta (part of Kolar-Chikballapur), have already been completed and engine rolling done.

Mital further said the preliminary engineering-cum-traffic survey for laying of the new BG line from Mysore to Kushalnagar (84.5 km) has been completed. The survey report, with estimated cost of Rs 667 crore, was submitted to the Railway Board on October 12.

“Land acquisition process can only be initiated after the work of construction of new line is sanctioned by Ministry of Railways,” he added.

PUNCTUALITY

Railways plans to provide comfortable rail travel to passengers and to achieve this “we have taken various measures to improve safety, security, passenger amenities, cleanliness and punctuality. The punctuality of running of mail/express trains and passenger trains have been maintained 95 per cent and 97 per cent respectively up to September 2012,” he claimed.

SWR has begun to take up work related to basic infrastructure like platforms, pit-lines and washing sidings.

Mital said an additional pit-line for 26 coaches at Yesvantpur (Bangalore) has been completed; pit-line for no 1&2 platforms at Hubli for accommodating 24 coaches have been extended from 18 to 22 . Additional pit-line no 3 for 23 coach length has been completed at Hubli. Similarly, at Vasco, Arsikere, Baiyapanahalli (Bangalore), existing pit-lines are have been extended for accommodating more coaches, said Mital.
