KOLKATA: Three-year-old Ayush Kumar Choubey, who underwent a cochlear surgery at the SER's Central Hospital at Garden Reach in Kolkata on Tuesday, is lucky. If everything goes well, the child - who was hearing impaired from birth -will start hearing soon.Son of Sheojee Kumar, a helper in the electrical department of South Eastern Railway (SER), Ayush was hearing impaired since birth. the first child to undergo cochlear surgery at the SER's Central Hospital at Garden Reach in Kolkata on Tuesday.This complicated and expensive surgery was conducted free of cost on the child. Two other children - siblings from Adra - will go under the scalpel after this.Children born with hearing impairment can undergo cochlear surgery before they attain the age of five years. The surgery involves implanting of a microchip in the brain of a child and a powerful hearing aid behind the ear. While only a few cochlear surgeries have been performed in Kolkata, no railway hospital in eastern India attempted this till now."Only hospitals under Western Railway and South Central Railway have attempted this surgery in the past.The first surgery at our hospital was conducted during a surgical workshop on cochlear surgery which was inaugurated by general manager A K Verma on Tuesday," said Soumitra Majumdar, CPRO, SER. |
