Chennai: In the wake of the recent fire tragedy in Chennai-bound Tamil Nadu Express which killed 32 persons, Southern Railway today warned of penal action against those carrying inflammable articles as it was banned in trains. The announcement also comes a day after six passengers were injured when they jumped off a running train near Vijayawada fearing their compartment had caught fire. "Passengers are advised not to carry inflammable material on trains as it will endanger the safety of passengers and railway assets. Any carriage of dangerous or offensive goods is prohibited under section 67 of the Railway Act and is punishable," Southern Railway said in a release. Further, in case of "genuine emergency," passengers may pull the alarm chain and wait for the train to stop but should not to alight from or jump off a moving train, it said. On July 30, a mystery fire destroyed a second class compartment of the New Delhi-Chennai Tamil nadu express, killing 32 persons. On Monday, six persons suffered injuries after they jumped off the Ernakulam-Guwahati Express, fearing that their compartment had caught fire. |
