MUMBAI: Western Railway (WR) has increased the capacity of Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani trains by adding three coaches to ease pressure on existing services. Plans are also afoot to introduce a "Rajdhani-type" train from Mumbai. The coach strength of the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express was 18 and it could not be increased due to technical constraints and the length of platform at Mumbai Central."After carrying out remodelling of the yard at Mumbai Central, we have been able to extend the length of platforms to accommodate 21-coach trains," a senior railway official said. "We carried out improvement in the electrical system by installing capacitors to improve the power supply system of the LHB coaches in Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains," he added. LHB coaches, which were first introduced in December 2003, are 18% longer than conventional ones and can accommodate more passengers. "The innovation allowed us to run a 21-coach Rajdhani Express from November 16 that helped WR clear all the passengers on wait-listed," an official added. WR's chief public relations officer Sharat Chandrayan said, "Due to augmentation of coaches, the number of passengers holding a wait-listed ticket will come down. Currently, the additional three coaches are introduced when the demand increases but it will become a permanent feature soon."Meanwhile, the new Rajdhani-class train will ease pressure on existing services, claim official. Currently, the Rajdhani Express and the August Kranti Rajdhani ply the Mumbai-Delhi route. However, the third Rajdhani-class train will require an approval from the Railway Board. "Since the services was not part of the budgetary announcement, WR has sought a formal approval," an official said. |
