Passengers allegedly assaulted railway officials at New Jalpaiguri station after the Howrah-bound Shatabdi Express started five hours behind schedule.The passengers alleged the authorities were delaying the train for the past few days because “they want to scrap it”. A senior railways official admitted lack of infrastructure and staff for the maintenance of the all-AC train.After the train finally left at 10.20am, instead of the scheduled 5.35am, railway workers’ unions blocked the tracks for around two hours to protest the assault on the employees, holding up three trains including a Rajdhani.“The authorities said the train was delayed because of a mechanical problem,” said Bikash Dutta, a passenger. The passengers allegedly beat up two assistant station managers and two pointsmen.
