Railway officials have suggested slew of measures to the transport and traffic planning body UTTIPEC that would help in decongesting traffic on Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg outside the Old Delhi railway station.

The suggestion were extended after reviewing the results of the 15-day trial run conducted at the station with a new circulating plan in the station premises, with city buses allowed to pick and drop passengers within the premises.

“The major changes which we have suggested, that would help in easing out the traffic, include creating a new bus stand, small road engineering exercise and providing a foot overbridge at the station,” a Northern railway official said.

The suggestions have come up after the railway officials reviewed the results of the trial run conducted between June 30 to July 15.

The HC had ordered the trial run while hearing a petition filed by NGO Manushi Sangathan on June 2.

The railway officials extended the suggestion during a meeting called by the UTTIPEC, which was attended by the representatives from Delhi Police, railways and PWD.

A new bus stand outside the current entry point of the station would prove handy in managing the overall traffic at the station, said an official.

“A new bus stand could come up on SPM Marg next to the entry point of the station.

Currently, there are some shops and a Rain Basera on the location. The new bus stop will help in improving navigation of the buses on the road as well as reduce the waiting time of the buses within the premise,” said a railway official.

The railway officials have also suggested to construct a new bus lane by clubbing the taxi lane within the station premise and the footpath on the SPM Marg.
