The damaged section of the railway track near Karikatti Cross between Suladhal and Sulebhavi stations was repaired on Tuesday and train services were restored on the route.A senior officer of the South Western Railway said the track was repaired at 1 p.m. and train services were restored after an inspection by engineers of the department.The track was damaged after the Hubli–Miraj Passenger (No.51420) derailed on Monday evening. Subsequently, some trains were cancelled and others were either diverted or terminated till Tuesday afternoon.While repairing the track, the body of a man was found. The deceased has been identified as Hemant Kupwade, a gangman in the Railways and a resident of Budihal of Gokak taluk in the district.He is survived by his wife and two daughters.Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa, accompanied by senior Railway officials, inspected the accident spot in the morning. He announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the family of the deceased and added that a job in the Railways would be given to a family member.Later, at a function to flag off the Yeshwantpur–Miraj superfast train, a two-minute silence was observed.Mr. Muniyappa felicitated a youth, Krishna, who helped rescue the accident victims.Officials of the Railway Safety Commission inspected the accident spot. They will submit a report on the cause of the derailment soon. |
