Indian Railway wants to power its electric need from renewable energy. The aim is to full its power need by upto 25% from renewable energy by year 2025 may become a reality provided an investment of $3.6 billion is done to produce 5GW of solar electricity. A potential 5 GW target, provides an opportunity for solar developers, with an estimated 1.1 GW coming from rooftop and 3.9 GW from utility scale projects. Prabhu said, “We want Indian Railways to become a green engine of growth. Decarbonisation is extremely important for Railways. We have set up a target of electrifying the entire network of Indian Railways in next 10 years with at least 90% of track electrification in next 5 years." Railway has launched a plan termed as Mission 41 in which the transporter aims to save Rs 41,000 crore through electrification of railway lines. |
