Railway has finally admitted that there has been an increase in number of derailments this year compared to last year. According to Indian Railways data, 67 derailment cases happened this year compared to 52 of last year. The most tragic derailment case this year happened in November and December. In November Indore – Patna Express derailed leaving 150 passengers dead and over 200 injured while on December 28 Ajmer – Sealdah Express derailed leaving over 50 injured. Railway says it is trying hard to strengthen rail infrastructure to achieve zero accident target. It has witnessed a decrease in number of accidents at unmanned crossings due to continuous building of subways. A railway official was posed a question that whether safety up gradation has been hit due to absence of enough funds to which his answer was negative. He said safety has always been a priority for Railways and has always been budgeted adequately. |
