Work along the new Maynaguri-Jogighopa (257 kms) new line and the Jiribam-Imphal (Tupul) new board gauge line projects is progressing satisfactorily. The Maynaguri-Jogighopa new line, traverses through the districts of Jalpaiguri and Cooch Behar in West Bengal and Dhubri and Bongaigaon districts in Assam. The project, which was included in the 2000-01 Railway Budget has witnessed an overall progress of 77.05 per cent work with Rs 1,056.22 crores spent till March this year. Work along the New Changrabandha-New Cooch Behar section and along the Gauripur-Jogighopa and Gauripur-Bilashipara sections of the project is underway and most likely to be completed by March 2014. Manipur, which is primarily dependent on the two national highways, NH-53 (Silchar-Imphal) and NH-39 (Numaligarh-Moreh via Imphal) for communication with the rest of the country, is being connected with the state's only rail network upto Jiribam. Jiribam is an extension of the Lumding-Sichar metre gauge section, presently being converted into a board gauge. The Jiribam-Imphal Road (Tupul) new line project was included in the 2003-04 Railway Budget and it was first proposed to terminate the line at Tupul due to the difficult hilly terrain. But, the government of india has decided to extend the line from Tupul to Imphal. The Jiribam-Tupul project is targeted to be completed at an estimated Rs 4,444 crores and will have 107 minor, seven major bridges, 35 tunnels and 7 new stations. sns |
