A proposal made by the railways more than three years ago to benefit senior citizens in the city has failed to bear fruit. The proposal was put forward by the railways to attach an extra coach to benefit senior citizens. The proposal would have ensured easy availability of tickets for senior citizens and avoid inconvenience to them while boarding the train. But, the proposed coach still needs to see the light of the day. Following the lackadaisical attitude of the officials, the senior citizens of the city have again demanded to attach an extra coach for them in trains that pass through the Ludhiana Railway Station so that they can board them easily. If the proposal comes into force, it would be easy for them to get tickets on various routes and with the addition of an extra coach more people could be accommodated.Deedar Singh, a retired food and supply officer said, "The railways is least bothered about the problems being faced by senior citizens. Firstly the railway station has no escalators through which senior citizens can move easily. Secondly no separate counter has been made for them to buy tickets."Singh said, "To top it all, no one is bothered to accomplish proposals of attaching a separate coach for senior citizens in trains, which is the need of the hour, as there is heavy flow of passengers at the Ludhiana railway station."The divisional railway manager (DRM), Vishlesh Choube, when contacted said, "We will take up the issue again and will send the proposal to authorities and know the status soon." |

Natural rubber would be used as one of the basic raw materials for the production. The grooved rubber sole plates are placed between concrete sleepers and the track to absorb vibrations and shock when a train runs on the railway line. The plates provide a cushioning effect ensuring better riding quality. The rubber plates were being supplied by private manufacturers to the railways, officials say adding that the workshop had evinced interest in producing them. The production is expected to start before this year.Alongside approving the new project and earmarking funds, the Southern Railway has also sanctioned Rs.1 crore each for extending the electrical maintenance shop; carry out improvements to the toilets; and for the construction of a gas storage shed inside the workshop.Housing over 25 different types of shops, the sprawling workshop also carries out periodic overhaul of air-conditioned and non air-conditioned passenger coaches besides constructing stainless steel body BOX-N wagons. |

| 9 | Indian Railways News / KMRL mulls reconstruction of South ROBon : Apr 22, 2012 - 20:00:20 PM |
|
|
KOCHI: The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) authorities will soon look into the possibilities of the reconstruction of the South Railway Overbridge (ROB) as part of the proposed Kochi Metro Rail project. The decision was taken by the KMRL authorities after holding a meeting on Saturday with various civil society organisations of the city. “The suggestion to rebuild the South ROB was a major request put forth by the participants of the meeting, as once the Metro Rail lines are completed in this area, the bridge can never be reconstructed. The restructuring of the bridge will solve most of the traffic congestion in the southern part of the city. We will check the possibility of the plan with authorities concerned and will take this forward,” said KMRL Managing Director Tom Jose. Regarding the parking facilities at the proposed Metro Rail stations, Jose said that a study report in this regard would be submitted within a month and further decisions would be taken based on the recommendations made in the report. The KMRL authorities will also convene regular meetings with civil society representatives once in every two months to discuss the development project and seek ways to minimise the problems and difficulties people might come across during project implementation. It will also launch an awareness programme called ‘Know Your Metro’. The participants also put forth the idea of extending the Metro Rail service to Tripunithura, Nedumbassery, Kakkanad and Western Kochi, to which Jose said that a feasibility study in all these areas will be conducted after the completion of the first phase of the Kochi Metro Rail. |
