HYDERABAD: Among the victims of the Tamil Nadu Express mishap was a 23-year-old techie from the city, D Shalini.

Shalini, a resident of Srinivas Nagar Colony in Kapra, had been working as a software engineer with Accenture in Chennai for the past one-and-a-half years.

On Saturday, Shalini along with her friends Sindhu (of Warangal) and Prashanti (from SR Nagar) had travelled to Karimnagar to attend the engagement ceremony of their roommate, one Ravali. Having attended the engagement, the three friends booked a ticket to Chennai from Warangal on Tamil Nadu Express. Shalini, Prashanti and Sindhu boarded the train from Warangal on Sunday night. They were allocated berth Nos 2, 3, 4 in the ill-fated coach S11.

While Shalini took the lower berth, her friends occupied the upper berths. When the fire started spreading, both Sindhu and Prashanti managed to get out of the berths and run into the adjacent compartments but Shalini was not as lucky as she got caught up in the stampede that ensued.

Later, her friends recognised Shalini's charred body by the help of the jewellery she had been wearing. It is learnt from family members that after a post-mortem, the body would be shifted to the city.

Shalini is survived by her parents, Hanumantha Reddy and Shoha, and her sister Sravanti. Shalini's father is into real estate business and her sister is a software engineer in Pune.

Chief Minister to write to Railway Ministry over the issue; Naidu blames Railways, Centre.

Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy has expressed shock and dismay over the fire accident in the Chennai-bound Delhi-Chennai Tamil Nadu Express near Nellore in the wee hours of Monday, in which several persons were burnt alive.

Immediately after receiving information about the accident, he instructed the district Collector and the Superintendent of Police of Nellore to rush fire extinguishers and medical and health personnel to the accident site to take up rescue and relief operations. He expressed deep sorrow and sympathy to the bereaved families.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister inspected the burnt S-11 coach of the ill-fated train.

Speaking at the accident site, he said he would soon write to the Railway Ministry seeking ‘safety audit’ of all trains. Asked about the cause of mishap, Mr. Reddy said the Railway authorities, forensic experts and the Commissioner of Railway Safety would look into the matter and exact cause would be known only after such a detailed inquiry. He stressed the need for looking into modernisation aspect and taking steps for maximising security.

Meanwhile, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu, honorary president of YSR Congress Party Y.S. Vijayamma, Rajya Sabha member K. Chiranjeevi and senior BJP leader Bandaru Dattatreya were among those who visited the site of accident.

CBI probe sought

Mr. Naidu blamed the negligence of Railways and the Centre for the accident. Demanding judicial and CBI inquiries into the mishap, Mr. Naidu alleged that the Railways had never implemented the recommendations of the safety commission to prevent the accidents.

Ms. Vijayamma requested the government to extend quality healthcare to those suffered injuries in the accident.

President of Lok Satta Party Jayaprakash Narayan urged the government to initiate all measures to guarantee safety of passengers using technological advances.

Congress MP K. Chiranjeevi demanded generous ex gratia payment to the families of victims by the State and Central governments. State secretary of CPI (M) B.V. Raghavulu, CPI secretary K. Narayana, State president of BJP G. Kishan Reddy and several TDP leaders -- N. Harikrishna, Nama Nageswara Rao, Sujana Chowdary, T. Devender Goud and K. Yerran Naidu extended their sympathies to the bereaved families.

Seventeen persons are still missing in yesterday’s Tamil Nadu express fire accident, while rescue workers recovered a total 32 charred bodies from the burnt S-11 coach. Railway authorities said the details of 17 persons who boarded the coach at different points are still not known. The accident occurred when a bogey of the Chennai bound Tamil Nadu Express caught fire between Nellore and Vedaypalem on the Vijayawada-Gudur section in the early hours of yesterday. Our correspondent reports that 28 passengers who sustained injuries are receiving medical aid at different hospitals in Nellore. She adds that four women are among the 17 passengers still not traceable. After making lot of efforts to identify the bodies, railway authorities have declared that the 17 passengers are missing. Six of them boarded the train in New Delhi and four at Vijayawada . Of the rest, three boarded the train at Jhansi ,two from Bhopal and one each from Nagpur and Agra . All of them were supposed to travel till Chennai. Heart-rending scenes were witnessed in the ill fated coach as rescue workers could not get some burnt bodies even intact. The agony of the relatives who came for identification to Nellore Government Hospital is touching. Forensic experts are also being consulted to find a way out for recognition of bodies which are completely burnt. Now the task before the authorities is to find ways and means for recognition of bodies and how to establish the identity of these missing passengers.

Heart-rending scenes were witnessed at the Vijayawada railway station, when relatives of the passengers who boarded Tamil Nadu Express were seen enquiring about the welfare of their kin at the help-desk on Monday.Family members of the missing persons in the train mishap were trying to get details of their dear ones over mobile phones, toll-free numbers and from the control rooms set up at Nellore and Vijayawada railway stations since morning.A total of 28 passengers boarded the train here which was proceeding to Chennai. The fate of several passengers was not known and their cell phones were not functioning. Friends and relatives of some passengers went to Nellore to know the fate of their dear ones.K. Venkata Ramana, his wife Pallavi, and aunt I. Nagarani, who boarded the ill-fated train, are missing and not responding over mobile phones.The couple, native of Anigandlapadu village in Penuganchiprolu mandal, in Krishna district, got married six months ago.Mr. Ramana is working as a software engineer in Chennai.The new couple along with Nagarani left home at 9 p.m. on Sunday to board the train, said Pallavi’s brother Amaresh, who thronged the help-desk here.Another couple – Y. Sampath Kumar and Jasnavi – of Penamaluru boarded the train at Vijayawada to go to Chennai. Sampath is undergoing treatment in Bollineni Hospital after the mishap, while the whereabouts of Jasnavi are not known.

A few passengers, including V. Koteswara Rao, S.S. Verma, S. Madanlal, Tirupatamma, and G.R. Srinivas, were admitted to other hospitals in Nellore.

The details of some other passengers were not known.
