CHENNAI: Two people who were crossing the railway tracks were knocked down by trains in the city on Sunday.

A 25-year-old man was run over by the Chennai-Kovai Express on Sunday near Avadi. A woman's body was recovered about 200 metres from the same accident spot. Her identity is yet to be ascertained.

Police said Silambarasan was employed in a private company in Ambattur and was crossing the tracks. They suspect he was speaking on the phone and had not seen or heard the approaching train. When the railway police came to move his body to a mortuary for postmortem, they found the body of a woman nearby.

A train passes this stretch approximately every 15 minutes. Railway officials said some stretches of railway track have walls alongside but people still trespass on railway property and cross the tracks. Some passengers lean out of the doors while the train is moving, and cause harm to themselves and others. They said many people talk on cell phones and are unaware of approaching trains.

Visakhapatnam: In a view to clear extra rush in regular trains and to provide a comfortable journey for passengers, Ministry of Railways has decided to run the following winter special trains.
Train no.08041 Santragachhi (Howrah)-Chennai Express will leave from Santragachhi at 12.30 pm (noon) on every Sunday between 9 to 30th December 2012, will arrive in Visakhapatnam on Mondays at 02.30am and depart at 02.50 am and will reach Chennai at 5.00pm on the same day.  In the return direction Train no. 08042 Chennai-Santragachhi Express will leave Chennai at 11.00am on every Tuesday between 4th December 2012 to 1st January 2013 will arrive in Visakhapatnam at 12.10 am (Midnight) that is early hours of Wednesday and depart at 12.30am and will reach Santragachhi at 02.15pm on the same day.
The pair of trains have a composition of  Two AC-2 tier, Nine Sleeper Classes, Six General Second Class Coaches and Two Guard cum Luggage Vans and stoppages at Kharagpur, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Khurda Road, Brahmapur, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Gudur railway stations between Santragachhi and Chennai.
In a similar way Train no. 08635 Hatia-Yesvantpur Express will leave Hatia at 09.40am on every Thursday between 6th December to 27th December 2012, will arrive inVisakhapatnam on Friday at 01.30am and depart at 01.50am will reach Yesvantpur 22.00hrs on the same day. In the return direction Train no. 08636 Yesvantpur-Hatia Express will leave Yesvantpur at 08.30hrs on every Saturday between 8th December to 29th December 2012 and will arrive in Visakhapatnam on Sunday at 05.00am depart at 05.20am and will reach Hatia at 09.30pm on the same day.
The pair of train will have Two AC-2 tier, Nine Sleeper Classes, Three General Second Class Coaches and Two Guard cum Luggage Vans in its composition and stoppages at Rourkela, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Bargarh Road, Bolangir, Titlagarh, Kesinga, Muniguda, Rayagada, Parvatipuram, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, Samalkot, Rajahmundry, Eluru, Vijayawada, Ongole, Nellore, Gudur, Renigunta, Katpadi, Jolarpeta, Bangarapet, and Krishnarajpuram railway stations between Hatia and Yesvantpur, informed the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, M. Yelvender Yadav.

Several families do not carry original documents while travelling on reserved tickets

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the railways to simplify the mandatory rule of carrying original identity cards while travelling.It said that people from lower and middle classes and those in remote villages faced difficulty in carrying identity cards while travelling on reserved tickets.The First Bench comprising Chief Justice M.Y. Eqbal and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam passed the interim order on a public interest litigation petition.The court made it clear that it was not staying the railways’ circular stipulating the condition that rail passengers should carry their identity cards in original during journey from December 1.In the petition, Coimbatore Consumer Voice, represented by its secretary N. Logu, said as per the recent circular, passengers failing to produce identity cards would be treated as ticketless travellers.The new condition was unreasonable, the petition said. Several families did not have family cards or voter identification. In the event of loss of original card, it was difficult to get a new one.Also, many passengers may not have a photo identity card. Minors and socially and economically backward sections were prevented from travelling by train because of this rule, it said.

The petitioner said the railways should permit photocopies of identity cards attested by a notary public or by a gazetted officer.

He sent a representation to the railways on November 26 in this regard, but till date there was no reply.

Directing the railway counsel to get instructions in this regard, the court posted the matter for further hearing after two weeks.

  Indian Railways News  / WR starts work to build dedicated freight corridor

The Western Railway (WR) has commenced enabling work for the sixth line corridor between Borivli and Mumbai Central, which will be used as a dedicated corridor for mail express operations. This will also create scope to increase services on the existing suburban corridor.

With view to using railway land in suburban Mumbai, which is currently occupied by the staff quarters, for the corridor, the WR is constructing a 20-storey building in Matunga north-end so that employees from Vile Parle and Jogeshwari can be shifted there. The railway project worth Rs1018 crore will be finished in two phases, from Borivli to Bandra Terminus in the first phase and Bandra Terminus to Mumbai Central in the second phase.

“We are aiming to complete the entire project in three years. The project will give an exclusive corridor to mail expresses and will provide more scope to increase suburban services,” said Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations officer, WR. 

Presently, the WR operates mail express trains on the fifth line — that is between Borivli-Bandra Terminus and Mahim to Bombay Central.

However, sometimes the express trains are also diverted onto the fast corridor. Once the sixth line becomes operational,  the diversion will reduce to a great extent, said the railway official. 

“Currently, the employee quarters building at Matunga north-end is under construction, so that employees residing in Vile Parle and Jogeshwari quarters can be shifted here. This is because the quarters land in the above suburbs will be required to accomplish the project,” added Chandrayan.
