A day-long drive to clear out unauthorised persons from the Chennai Central station was carried out by Government Railway Police (GRP) teams on Tuesday. This comes a day after a mentally challenged man scaled the clock tower building of the historic station and threatened to jump. He was rescued by firemen after a five-hour long struggle.According to V. Ponramu, deputy superintendent of police, GRP, the drive started in the morning with teams combing every platform and other locations of the stations. “We found 16 men suffering from mental illness wandering on the platforms. They were rescued and sent to the Institute of Mental Health here for treatment,” Mr. Ponramu added. The drive, which went on till the evening, is expected to continue in the coming days with police teams checking on other persons, including destitute persons, middlemen and cons. The GRP also plans to carry out another initiative to bring the station under security cover. Every entry and exit point would be manually monitored, apart from surveillance through a CCTV network. Suspected persons will be frisked and every platform monitored, GRP sources said. |
