Salem Divisional Security Commissioner of Railway Protection Force (RPF) S. Parthasarathy on Tuesday inaugurated the parcel x-ray inspection scanner at Coimbatore Junction and also a running room for the loco pilots and assistant loco pilots in the presence of Divisional Railway Manager Sujatha Jayaraj.Besides Chennai, Coimbatore Junction is the first to get a Rs.55-lakh parcel scanner for the parcel booking office and two scanners each costing Rs.25 lakh for screening the personal luggage of passengers.Efforts are on to put the passenger luggage scanners into use at the earliest.Assistant Security Commissioner Ananda Raj, Additional Divisional Railway Manager V. Thavamani Pandi and Senior Divisional Commercial Manager D. Lakshmanan were present.

Ms.Sujatha Jayaraj said that the railway employees at the parcel booking office were first trained on how to operate the scanning machine.

The scanner manufactured by ECIL (Electronics Corporation of India Limited) would identify the materials inside the parcel through four different colours.

Organic materials such as paper, food items, wood, cloth, leather, explosives and drugs would be shown in orange colour, light metals such as aluminium, printed circuit board, salt and plastics in green colour, medium metals such as tin, copper, wires, iron sheet, gun, knives and metal pens and ornaments in blue colour and very thick metals that x-ray cannot penetrate such as lead, stainless steel with thickness of more than 28 mm and gold bars would be shown in black colour.

The running room renovated at Rs. 45 lakh has 32 beds.
