Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has clarified that there is no effect on Indian Raiways post demonetisation. Indian Railways has not witnessed a single digit fall due to demonetisation after November 8 when government imposed demonetisation of older 500 and 1000 rupee notes. Indian railways is considered to be lifeline of country and Prachu asserted that the demonization is not affecting railways even on short term basis. He said that people are just speculating effects of demonetization as there is no data suggesting that there is any impact on railways. He however accepted that movement of coal through railways has gone down, cement and steel have shown slowness but it is not due to de monetisation infact Railways is witnessing this before the decision was taken by the government. I will not attribute (it) to the demonetisation," Suresh Prabhu said. On the contrary he praised the digitisation effort made by the government as he highlighted that 58% of railway passengers opt internet for booking seats. He said, “Look at the profile of the people, either middle class or the poor. For them, this is the only means of transportation. And they are booking tickets through the internet." |
