Through a RTI application filed by Godfrey Pimenta from Watchdog Foundation it has been revealed that Western Railway has prosecuted more than 53,000 people in last five years for crossing suburban tracks illegally. Authorities have collected a fine of Rs. 2.40 crore from defaulters. Trespassing has always one of the factors for death on tracks. Although railway is trying to curb it out but still as many as 53,329 persons were caught trespassing on Western Railway section. Under MUTP (Mumbai Urban Transport Project) special funds have also been allocated so that foot-overbridges can be constructed. Besides regular vigils are also done by enforcement squad so that trespassers can be caught and fined. Counselling is also done so that offence shall not be repeated again. Boundary walls are also created alongside tracks to stop mushrooming of slum. Pimenta pointed out, “However, data procured under RTI has revealed that deaths reported in suburban section between Churchgate and Dahanu Road stations for the past five years was 2,895.” |
