In the face of large scale exodus of people from the Northeast from the city fearing assault on the community, the City police Commissioner JK Tripathy convened a meeting with welfare associations of the people of Northeastern states here on Friday. Similarly, office bearers of Chennai Assam Association approached Assamese people at the Chennai Central Railway Station, who were waiting to board trains to return home, to allay their fears.Tripathy said they need not panic about the fake SMS alerts on reported assaults on their community members in the State and that action would be taken against the miscreants. So far, no violence was reported in and around Chennai. The police have set up a special round-the-clock control room with toll free numbers 9840295100, 9677066100, and 9789088100.Meanwhile, JCP-East SN Seshasai and JCP-North NK Senthamaraikannan went to Central and Egmore Railway Stations to allay the fears of those waiting to board trains back home.Dr BHA Roli, Advisor to Assam Association, said 15,000 Assamese were living in Chennai and on Friday, 1,400 people were at the railway station. “There is no threat for you. Do not panic and leave Tamil Nadu; all the rumours are false. You will not have any problems,” Roli told the waiting people, but to little avail.GRP and the RPF personnel were deployed in good strength at the station. Station Manager (Central) S Govindasamy said 530 unreserved tickets were booked for Guwahati, and 400 for Kolkata from Chennai, which was usual. But hundreds were pouring in from Bangalore and Coimbatore by road and trains and hence, assessing their numbers was tough. Over 1,000 were likely to leave by special trains from Bangalore to Guwahati via Central, where additional coaches would be attached.
