The Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has urged the Coimbatore Corporation to do a thorough study before going ahead with the mono rail project.Mayor S.M. Velusamy had at the recent Council meeting said that the Coimbatore Corporation Council resolved to request the State Government to sanction mono rail project for the city.In a release, the party’s district secretary V. Eswaran said that it appeared that the Corporation seemed to have decided on mono rail without undertaking any study, for a project of such huge investment.Hundreds of crores would be required if the city were to have a mass transportation project and that called for a thorough study. The party and the public would like to know the study the Mayor relied on to suggest that the Government should sanction mono rail project for Coimbatore.Mr. Eswaran said that the mono rail would carry far lesser people compared to metro rail. A light metro project would carry three times more passengers for the same investment. Besides, the operation cost of mono rail was higher than the light metro. He also pointed out that cities such as Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Jaipur, Kanpur, Lucknow, Nagpur, Indore, Kochi and Patna had gone ahead of Coimbatore in taking up mass transportation projects. The city and State administration should not wait any longer and go ahead for a project to ease traffic congestion in the fast-developing city. |
