Heavy landslide in Mahadevtila locality, three km from Haflong, the headquarters of Dima Hasao district, claimed two lives this morning. Besides the death of two women, four persons were injured in the incident. A senior police officer in Haflong today said following torrential rains for the past couple of days large chunk of soil and rock came down the hill on a house situated at the edge of the hill in Mahadevtila. Landslides occurred at 8.15 am and again at 11 am.

Meanwhile, torrential rain over the past few days in this part of North-East triggered landslide in at least nine places along nearly 170 km stretch between Mandardisa and Damcherra stations on Lumding-Silchar Hill section of NF Railway. The debris that came down the Barail Hills on the railway track early today caused cancellation of services of all the trains in this section for an indefinite period, an NFR official said today.

The landslides on both railway lines and roads cut off southern Assam, Tripura, Mizoram and parts of Manipur from the rest of the country.
