Passengers had a close shave on Sunday afternoon when two coaches of a local train derailed in Kolkata, disrupting train services in the south section of Sealdah division for several hours. The accident took place at around 12.10 pm near Ballygunge Station. The 34129 Up Budge Budge local had left platform no. 3 of Ballygunge Station for Sealdah station when soon a deafening sound filled the air along with smoke. The train stopped. The last two compartments (no. 10 and 11), including one reserved for women, were found to be out of the track, according to the passengers and local residents. Preliminary investigations suggested that the derailment occured when the train was passing through a point beneath Bijon Setu. A stretch of the track was damaged as an impact of the derailment. The overhead electric line was also snapped. A female passenger reportedly got injured when she jumped out of one of the coaches, out of fear. She was hospitalised. The Eastern Railway (ER), however, informed that no one was injured. The mishap stalled train movement along the Up and Down tracks at Ballygunge Station from 12.14 pm. |
