New Delhi: Delhi Metro's proposed Jamia Nagar Metro Station will now come up at one end of the Jamia Millia Islamia in the capital after the institution took objection to the structure being built on the main gardens.A study conducted by the Delhi Metro has given the go-ahead for shifting of the station by 100 to 200 metres from the proposed location as all tests conducted at the spot are successful. The findings of the study, which was commissioned last week, will be shared with authorities of the Central University on Friday, sources said.During the meeting, Delhi Metro will discuss the plan for the station and other issues like handing over of the land on which the new station would come up. "The study is completed and all tests are successful. The station can be shifted from in front of the administrative block to a near-by spot," the source said.Jamia Vice Chancellor Najib Jung had opposed the station in front of the gardens which overlooks the administrative building, saying it would bring in safety issues for women students. However, after talks Jung agreed for shifting of the station from the current location to a spot within the varsity campus. Earlier, the station was to be constructed on the gardens of the varsity but now it will be shifted 100 to 200 metres away and built by razing a couple of buildings, the source said.A Metro station in the area which has poor transport facilities would help thousands of people in Jamia Nagar, Batla House and Zakir Nagar. The new spot is right where Jamia Nagar begins and it would be more closer to the residential areas. The station around the Jamia Milia Islamia campus would benefit at least 20,000 people, including students, daily once Metro operations start on the corridor. |
