Indian Railways is eyeing to reduce its dependence on diesel fuel by electrifying tracks further. Indian Union Railway Minister said, "Reducing dependence on conventional fuels is priority for environment conservation and we are targeting electrification of the railway tracks so that the use of diesel may get nominal." Electrification will also help cut down on emissions. To achieve its goal, Ministry of Railway has created a separate environment directorate and it was working with United Nations Environment Programme. "Water conservation itself resulted in a saving of Rs 300 crore across railways. Environment conservation will also help to boost economy. Railway is switching to other forms of renewable energy like wind and solar energy." Prabhu said. |
