Railways plans to induct high power locomotives to carry more goods at higher speed as part of its technological upgrading programme.According to the plan, the national transporter has produced the prototype 5500 horsepower (HP) diesel locomotives which are already running as a pilot project in North Central Railway.Known as 5500 HP WDG5, the high power locomotive is being developed by Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) at Varanasi, a production unit of Railways.There will be more such high power locomotives manufactured at the DLW in future, said a senior Railway Ministry official.The 5500 HP WDG5 is primarily aimed at improving the capacity with higher balancing speed. The locomotive is equipped with advanced technology such as electronic fuel injection (for higher fuel efficiency and emission control) to run at 100 km per hour speed higher axle load.DLW's locomotive designs implement collision protection, provision for heating, ventilation and air conditioning and improved visibility thereby setting up new standards for crew comport and safety.Currently, DLW manufactures locomotives with a wide horsepower range, from 1400 HP to 5500 HP for multiple track gauges.Besides meeting the needs of non-railway customers in India, DLW is exporting locomotives to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Malaysia, Tanzania, Sudan, Senegal, Mozambique and Myanmar.The factory is also manufacturing diesel generator (DG) sets and supplying them to Nuclear Power Corporation India Limited's plants at Kota, Narora, Kaiga and Kalpakkam.

Having manufactured over 6700 locomotives till date, DLW is now one of the biggest locomotive manufacturers in the world. In 2012-13, it manufactured an unprecedented 294 locomotives, thereby increasing its production nearly three times from 112 locomotives manufactured in 2002-03.

Set up in 1964, DLW will be completing 50 years of its production service next year.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Chief Mr.Mangu Singh has told the Urban Development Ministry that the amount equivalent to termination payment

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) Chief Mangu Singh has told the urban development ministry that the amount equivalent to termination payment (Rs.1820 crore) that the DMRC has to pay to the concessionaire of the airport express line should be given to DMRC as an interest-free subordinate debt to be equally shared by the Centre and government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).

The operations of the 22.7-km express line was handed over to DMRC after the concessionaire Reliance Infra promoted Delhi Airport Express Private (DAMEPL) pulled out of the project on July 1. The banks have already told DMRC to terminate the concession agreement with DAMEPL on account of default. According to the concession agreement, DMRC is liable to pay 80% (Rs.1820 crore) of the outstanding debt (Rs.2274 crore) as termination payment.

To sort out the issue of termination payment Singh has written to the MoUD suggesting sources of the funds to pay the termination amount.

“The subordinate debt will be retired by DMRC in five equal installments after a moratorium of ten years by which time the line is expected to have operating surplus,” Singh wrote.

Singh said that since DMRC will continue to bear the operating losses of the airport line, it will be appropriate that the liability arising on the account of the termination payment is taken care of by GOI and GNCTD

Another option that Singh has suggested is that the DMRC raises the amount equivalent to termination payment as loan from the bank/financial institutions with guarantee from the Centre.

“This will enable the loan to be raised at a minimum cost at about 10% which is the current base rate of commercial banks. Further, DMRC may be given an interest subsidy to be shared between the Central and the state government to the extent of the difference between the current rate of JICA loan (1.4% per annum) and the cost of borrowing from the banks (@10% per annum),” the letter said.

The operation expenses of the airport express line per year is around Rs 90 core whereas the revenues are Rs 30 crore a year.

MANGALORE: Konkan Railway will operate AC Super Fast special trains between Ahmedabad and Mangalore on a weekly basis during Diwali Festival to clear extra rush of passengers.The Ahmedabad - Mangalore Special train 09420 will run on every Wednesday from October 16 to November 27 with a total of seven trips. The train will leave from Ahmedabad at 4.35pm and will reach Mangalore at 7.40 pm next day. This time table is applicable up to October 31 of monsoon time table. From November 1 onwards during the non monsoon Time Table, the train will leave from Ahmedabad at 4.35 pm and will reach at Mangalore at 7.05 pm on next day.Train 09419 Mangalore - Ahmedabad Special train will run every Thursday from October 17 to November 28, again with a total of seven trips. The train will leave from Mangalore at 10.30 pm and reach Ahmedabad at 12.50 am on third day up to October 31. From November 1 onwards, the train will leave from Mangalore at 10.30pm and reach Ahmedabad at 23.15 pm on second day.

The special trains will halt at Nadiyad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Vapi, Vasai, Panvel, Roha, Khed, Chiplun, Sangameshwar, Ratnagiri, Kankavali, Kudal, Pernem, Thivim, Karmali, Madgaon, Karwar, Kumta, Murdeshwar, Bhatkal, Kundapur, Udupi, Suratkal, Thokur. The train will have 15 Coaches.

Amritsar:
Even as the Union Railway Ministry had announced the commencement of Amritsar-Lalkuan Express in February this year, its launch has got delayed due to want of notification. It has been learnt that the racks have arrived here for the train which would operate once in a week. The train would facilitate a large section of Sikh population residing in Lalkuan area of Uttarakhand. —

VADODARA: Sixteen trains were cancelled by the railways on Wednesday due to waterlogging between Vadodara and Bharuch railway stations. Several other trains were diverted, partially cancelled or rescheduled.A release by Vadodara division of Western Railway stated that five trains were partially cancelled, while five others were rescheduled. Four trains were short-terminated at stations much before their destinations even as nine others were diverted.The division also announced that Vadodara-Bhilad (19114), Valsad-Dahod (12929), Valsad-Ahmedabad (19109) and Mumbai-Ferozepur (19023) trains would remain cancelled Thursday. The division has also started a helpline number (0265-2362012) to give information regarding the trains.

          More than o­ne lakh additional berths have been created by East Coast Railway to clear the waitlisted passengers during Puja Season this year i.e. from September to October 2013.

          With a view to provide comfort to the commuters and also to clear the huge waitlist of passengers during the peak season, East Coast Railway has taken steps to run special trains towards different destinations from its jurisdiction and also by augmenting additional coaches in different mail/express trains. Through this, 1,76,580 additional berths (including 94,564 additional berths originating from ECoR) have been created to provide comfortable journey to the passengers during this peak Puja-rush Season.

          Similarly, Railways is running 16 Special Trains from and through ECoR jurisdiction towards different destinations of the country out of which 07 special trains (65 trips) are originating from East Coast Railway System. The special trains originating from East Coast Railway jurisdiction will provide 66,544 additional berths to the commuters travelling to their destinations during the period. These trains are- Bhubaneswar-New Delhi AC Super fast Express via Angul and Sambalpur City, Bhubaneswar-Yesvantpur AC Super fast Express,  Visakhapatnam-Tata via Keonjhar, Puri-Santragachhi, Puri-Sealdah, Visakhapatnam-Kollam and Visakhapatnam-Secunderabad AC Super fast Express. Apart from this, 82,026 berths have been created in 09 special trains passing through ECoR jurisdiction to facilitate the passengers between Hatia & Yesvantpur via Sambalpur, Santragachhi-Kochuveli, Hyderabad-Shalimar, Shalimar-Yesvantpur, Secunderabad-Guwahati, Kamakhya-Yesvantpur, Kamakhya-Chennai, Santragachhi-Chennai and Dibrugarh & Kochuveli.

East Coast Railways would like passengers to avail the services of these special trains during the forthcoming Puja Season to avoid rush in regular Mail/Express long distance trains.
