The cost of this metal has increased by almost 400 percent in one year.Theft of copper pipes, tubing, and wiring has been on the rise in recent years due to the increased value for scrap copper. The US Department of Energy estimates that this once minor problem has exploded into $1 billion a year nightmare. Construction sites, abandoned buildings, and commercial heating and air conditioning units have been the biggest targets for these thieves. More often than not the damage caused obtaining the copper vastly exceeds the value of the copper, but this does not deter the thieves. 

Not only are business stuck having to repair or replace equipment stripped of copper, the damage often results in the loss of electricity, water, and heating or air conditioning resulting in the discontinuing of business until the repairs are completed.

Now, in parallel with the theft, businesses selling a variety of services to catch copper thieves are growing globally. 

An anti-theft system can cost thousands of NOK. The revenues in anti-copper-theft companies doubles every year.

AIROLI: The direct railway service between Navi Mumbai and Kalyan is all set to begin, with the railways inviting tenders for constructing a bypass between Airoli and Kalwa this month.Thane MP Sanjeev Naik has claimed that the Maharashtra Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) will complete the much awaited project. Naik has been following the matter with the railway ministry since 2009.The railway ministry had cleared the project in 2011 and a budget of Rs350 crores was allotted for the same in 2012."Now the tendering process is on. It is a dream project meant to facilitate direct railway access between Navi Mumbai and Kalyan," said Naik.He added that the MRVC has also invited tenders for laying the fifth and sixth lines between Thane and Diva. The project, which is aimed to provide separate track for the fast trains, will cost around Rs100 crore.The MRVC will carry out the work in three phases with the Thane-Kalwa line in the first phase, Kalwa-Mumbra in the second phase and Mumbra-Diva in the third phase. In the first phase, MRVC will spend Rs25 crore.For the residents of Kalyan and Dombivli, this line will offer direct access to APMC market and the proposed international airport in Navi Mumbai. People working in Navi Mumbai-based IT firms and JNPT will also benefit.Then project will also reduce the woes of the daily commuters. Passengers have responded favourably to the project. "At present, commuters get down at Thane station to board the Kalyan-bound trains and vice versa," said Avinash Chopra, an engineering student from Airoli.

These two projects are termed to be landmarks in the railway development between Navi Mumbai and Kalyan. With the projects being completed, the traffic pressure on the Central Railway, especially at Thane, Diva, Kalwa and Mumbra will be considerably reduced. "The proposed railway development will reduce the distance between the two cities"

In the wake of the Babu Genu municipal market building collapse in Dockyard Road, occupants of several buildings that are located alongside the railway track in Masjid and Sandhurst Road areas have now voiced fears that the structures are in urgent need of repair. Some of these buildings are over 100 years old.

On Keshavji Naik Road in Masjid, employees working at a three-storey office complex fear that the 15-year-old building might collapse. A tenant who runs his business at the complex said, "The building, with 24 small offices, has double the number of rooms than is allowed. We are in talks with the owner of the building to arrange for repairs."

The building, less than a few feet away from the railway track, is subject to tremors when trains from the Harbour Line pass by. The office complex is one of the many buildings along the railway track that is in need of immediate attention. Many of these buildings have unauthorised cantilevered construction on the top floor, and illegal extensions and alterations on the ground floor.

An oil trader, Shabeer Ahmed, runs his business in the Saraswati Sadan building which is located next to a commuter bridge above the tracks at Masjid. Ahmed said, "The building is more than 100 years old. Although we do not fear a collapse, the structure definitely needs repair." The multi-storey building stands next to a row of shanties that overlook the tracks.

A resident of one of the shanties along the railway tracks, Altaf Ahmed, said, "Our house has only one floor. It shakes when trains pass but we have grown accustomed to it. Since we cannot afford repairs, we have not attended to the ruptured walls."

A 10-foot stone wall, built as a support for a row of sloping structures, stands a foot away from the railway track on platform No.1 at Sandhurst road station. The support wall has been developing cracks for many years, say commuters. A commuter, Sudarshan Ramani, said, "I have been commuting on the Harbour Line trains for the last five years. I have been seeing the cracks on the wall ever since I can remember.""The collapse of the wall could result in a landslide on the tracks," said Sulaiman Bhimani, an activist, who has written to BMC chief Sitaram Kunte and other authorities about alleged illegalities in these buildings.

A first-of-its-kind stainless steel AC EMU being rolled out at ICF factory in Perambur on Tuesday. — DC Chennai: Rail travellers in the city should perhaps wait long for facilities like GPS based passenger annou­ncement on EMUs.

Southern Railway general manager Rakesh Misra cited technical shortcomings plus financial constraints and said  provision of amenities like GPS enabled public address system aboard EMUs (electrical multiple units) and stainless steel coaches would not happen immediately.

He was responding to media queries after flagging off the first fully stainless steel AC EMU rake with IGBT based 3-phase propulsion system produced with German engineering at ICF for phase-II of Mumbai urban transport project (MUTP).

Asked if Southern Railway would also buy stainless steel coaches from ICF for city EMUs, he said the MUTP project was funded by World Bank and Southern Railway does not have adequate funds to buy such expensive coaches as of now.

Earlier, addressing workers, ICF chief electrical engineer S. Sridhar said ICF would switch over to stainless steel in the next four years as soon as the Rs 600 crore conversion project gets over.

Listing out the value addition available in the new train, ICF chief mechanical engineer Pankaj Kumar said the new energy efficient and air conditioned EMU has been designed to allow 16,000 cubic meters of fresh air per hour in to a coach.

Lauding the Integral Coach Factory for delivering the value added coaches in time, Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation chairman cum managing director Rakesh Saksena presented Rs 1 lakh cash award to ICF and said the two-phase MUTP would ease the burden on Mumbai's overcrowded urban metro rail network.

With dna taking up the complaint of railway commuters at Elphinstone Road station, Western Railways Mumbai divisional railway manager Shailendra Kumar on Monday afternoon cracked down on hawkers outside the station and promised action to improve the clogged approach-road to the station.

Commuters at the station in the west have been complaining of a bad approach-road littered with garbage and debris. The road has been taken up by hawkers completely, leaving no space for commuters to walk. The area outside Parel station in the east has been paved up by Central Railway and a proper walkway built there.

"There is utter chaos outside Elphinstone station with debris lying there, with the garbage bin open, with an uneven road, and slums and illegal stalls set up inside the railway premises. I had complained to everybody, but no action is ever taken. Even the space reserved for ambulance(s) has been encroached upon," Sanjay P Ghavate, a regular commuter said.

When dna had complained about hawkers to the senior divisional commissioner of Railway Protection Force a few months ago, hawkers from the bridge had come down to dna office requesting to get the complaint withdrawn.

With more and more offices setting up here, the crowd during peak hours has increased and commuters have to jostle for space while making their way out of the station through this stretch.

WR Mumbai's divisional manager Shailendra Kumar promised to improve the situation and began a crackdown on Monday afternoon with removal of hawkers and encroachers.

Hoshiarpur:
Hoshiarpur district of Punjab has finally got a direct rail link with National Capital. Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Santosh Chaudhary flagged off the weekly Hoshiarpur-Delhi Express today. She said the weekly service would soon be made daily. Santosh travelled in the same train to Delhi.The new rail link is likely to help local farmers tap Delhi and other markets, boost industry and tourism sectors and create more jobs for the youth.The train would halt at six places — Jalandhar Cantt, Phagwara, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt and Panipat — on its way to Delhi. It would leave Delhi junction at 11.03 pm every Saturday and reach Hoshiarpur at 7.10 am the next day. On the return journey, it would start from Hoshiarpur at 10.30 pm on Sunday and reach Delhi at 7.10 am on Monday.

MADURAI: The train schedule on Dindigul-Palani section has been altered to accommodate the recently introduced Palani-Chennai Central daily express. According to a statement from the Madurai railway division, timings of a few trains have been changed with effect from October 2.While 56776 Dindigul-Palani passenger will leave Dindigul at 4.20pm instead of 4.30pm and reach Palani at 5.40pm. Dindigul - Palani passenger (56774) will leave Dindigul at 3.15pm, instead of 3.20pm and reach Palani at 4.40pm. Palani-Madurai passenger (56709) will leave Palani at 5pm and reach Madurai at 8.15pm. Dindigul-Palani passenger (56772) and Palani-Dindigul passenger (56775) have been cancelled.
