MADURAI: The train schedule on Dindigul-Palani section has been altered to accommodate the recently introduced Palani-Chennai Central daily express. According to a statement from the Madurai railway division, timings of a few trains have been changed with effect from October 2.While 56776 Dindigul-Palani passenger will leave Dindigul at 4.20pm instead of 4.30pm and reach Palani at 5.40pm. Dindigul - Palani passenger (56774) will leave Dindigul at 3.15pm, instead of 3.20pm and reach Palani at 4.40pm. Palani-Madurai passenger (56709) will leave Palani at 5pm and reach Madurai at 8.15pm. Dindigul-Palani passenger (56772) and Palani-Dindigul passenger (56775) have been cancelled.

Minister of State for Railways K Surya Jaya Prakash Reddy called on Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Virbhadra Singh on Wednesday.They had detailed discussion regarding strengthening of Railway Network in the State and also regarding expediting work on Railways projects being commissioned in the State.The Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister said that Railways should look into the possibility of alternative route to link Baddi area with railway network, as it was very important keeping in view of the upcoming industrial and commercial complexes in Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh areas.Virbhadra Singh said that Bilaspur-Bhanupalli-Berri Railway Line should be taken up at earliest as the State Government would provide free Government land for this.He said that work on Nangal-Talwara Railway Line should be expedited as only 44 kms. Railway track has been constructed on this line from Nangal to Amb during last 33 years.

The Chief Minister also requested the Minister of State to provide adequate budget for survey on Ghanoli-Baddi-Kala Amb-Paonta Sahib-Deshradoon broad guage railway line and all other railway lines which were announced in the Railway budget.

Chief Minister said that Kalka-Shimla railway section should be well maintained as it was very important from tourism point of view and its historical significance.

Minister of State apprised the Chief Minister that a team from UNSECO would visit soon for inspection of Kalka-Shimla railway section.

A delegation from Hospet met Minister for Railways Mallikarjun Kharge, during his official visit to Hubli on Wednesday, and urged him to improve rail facilities to Bellary-Hospet-Koppal section.

In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Kharge, delegation members drew the former’s attention to the neglect towards Bellary-Hospet-Koppal section in getting new trains and rail facilities.Direct train

Introduction of a direct train service between Chennai and Mumbai, via Bellary-Hospet-Koppal; inter-city train between Hospet and Bangalore for the benefit of tourists visiting Hampi, via Bellary and Raidurg; re-introduction of the Bijapur-Bellary-Dharmavaram train, which was plying prior to the unigauge project, to link the two world heritage sites – Hampi and Pattadakal – besides providing a direct link between Bellary and Bijapur were some of the demands put forth.

In the face of rising incidence of loot of passengers after drugging them, the East Coast Railways (ECoR) has launched a massive awareness programme among rail users and travellers.The RPF unit of Khurda Road Division conducted a programme at Berhampur railway station and distributed info-leaflets to passengers making them aware on activities of drug peddlers, snatchers and robbers moving in trains and stations.A mock rescue of a passenger drugged by miscreants in a train was also demonstrated. A street play ‘Bhul Hoigala’ was also presented, educating people how miscreants befriend innocent passengers, offer intoxicated eatable items and then loot them. The Railway security force has urged passengers not to take food, drinks and prasad which may have intoxicating elements from any co-passenger. It has also asked people not to buy railway tickets from the touts or any unauthorised agent.Passengers have been advised to immediately inform security personnel if they suspect the activities of anybody as well as unclaimed luggage in trains and platforms.

Meanwhile, ECoR has announced three more special trains between Puri and Santragachhi in Kolkata in view of increase in passenger flow during Durga Puja.

The Santragachhi-Puri Special train will leave Santragachhi at 7 pm on October 10 and arrive at Puri at 4.15 am on October 11. In the return direction, the train will leave Puri at 6.20 pm on October 11 and reach Santragachhi at 3.10 am on October 12.

The second Santragachhi-Puri Special train will leave Santragachhi at 08.30 am on October 13 and arrive at Puri at 5.10 pm on the same day. In return direction, it will leave Puri at 11 pm on October 13 and reach Santragachhi at 8.05 am next day.

The third train will leave Santragachhi at 7 pm on October 17 and arrive at Puri at 4.15 am on October 18. In the return direction, it will leave Puri at 5.30 am on October 18 and arrive at Santragachhi at 2.30 pm on the same day. The trains  will have stoppages at Khurda Road, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Jajpur-Keonjhar Road, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kharagpur between Puri and Santragachhi.

With dna taking up the complaint of railway commuters at Elphinstone Road station, Western Railways Mumbai divisional railway manager Shailendra Kumar on Monday afternoon cracked down on hawkers outside the station and promised action to improve the clogged approach-road to the station.

Commuters at the station in the west have been complaining of a bad approach-road littered with garbage and debris. The road has been taken up by hawkers completely, leaving no space for commuters to walk. The area outside Parel station in the east has been paved up by Central Railway and a proper walkway built there.

"There is utter chaos outside Elphinstone station with debris lying there, with the garbage bin open, with an uneven road, and slums and illegal stalls set up inside the railway premises. I had complained to everybody, but no action is ever taken. Even the space reserved for ambulance(s) has been encroached upon," Sanjay P Ghavate, a regular commuter said.

When dna had complained about hawkers to the senior divisional commissioner of Railway Protection Force a few months ago, hawkers from the bridge had come down to dna office requesting to get the complaint withdrawn.

With more and more offices setting up here, the crowd during peak hours has increased and commuters have to jostle for space while making their way out of the station through this stretch.

Consequently trains on the Mangalore route towards Kerala and Chennai would be regulated from 45 minutes to three hours. There will also be partial cancellation of some trains. The trains that will be regulated on Thursday are: Train 16649 Mangalore Central - Nagarcoil Parasuram Express will be regulated enroute for 240 minutes; Train 16650 Nagarcoil - Mangalore Central Parasuram Express will be regulated in Thiruvananthapuram Division for 45 minutes; Train 16345 Lokmanya Tilak - Thiruvananthapuram Central Netravathi Express to be regulated enroute for 175 minutes.
