NEW DELHI: A man was arrested on aturday for sealing Rs 4.7 lakh from the bag of a traveller in Metro train here, police said. The stolen money was recovered.Gajaba, 30, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station in the morning soon after the victim, in his 50s, raised an alarm, police said.Police have recovered Rs 4.7 lakh from Gajaba's bag which he stole from the passenger going towards Uttam Nagar from Seelampur."A victim boarded the Metro from Kashmiri Gate. As he reached Rajiv Chowk he found the cash which he had kept in his bag was missing. He started shouting and police deployed at the station arrested Gajaba," a police officer told IANS.Gajaba told police that he worked in a group with three other people.They identified a target in the Metro and followed him or her. The gang members surrounded the target and one of them would use a blade to slash open the target's bag and take away cash or valuables, police said.Police have launched a search to nab Gajaba's accomplices.

Metro Panel Found Construction Lapses At Noida Stn, 2 Officials Suspended
New Delhi: The high-level inquiry committee constituted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, after a TOI report, has found that increased passenger weight on the Noida City Center station platform led to sagging of the structure. A part of the platform had developed cracks and sagged, prompting DMRC to undertake emergency repairs and erect support for the pillar.
    “The increased weight of passengers on the platform, after the introduction of eightcoach trains, contributed to the sagging,” said Jitender Tyagi, director (works). The reason, said Tyagi, is that the main reinforcement bars are missing in the pillar. “The pier should have main reinforcement bars placed at 180mm from the top of the cantilever arm,” he said. The cover-meter, an instrument used by DMRC, found these bars at a depth of 400mm instead.
    “These are steel lap bars, which are placed to provide continuity since water pipes go through the arms of the cantilever. These bars provide extra support,” said Tyagi. Twelve such lap bars are supposed to be placed from the top to support the platform. However, when Delhi Metro inspected the pier, it discovered that the first such bar was at a depth of 400mm rather than all 12 bars being placed at 330mm from the top. With these support bars being too far below to be effective, the platform started sagging as soon as the weight increased, explained Tyagi.
    The Delhi Metro is now also undertaking an inspection of other stations, constructed during phase II, including the Faridabad line. Stations under the Noida City Center package, undertaken by Gammon India, have already been surveyed, added officials.
    The report, which was submitted to DMRC head Mangu Singh on Saturday, indicts the construction agency and Delhi Metro engineers who were incharge of the project. Two DMRC officials—a junior and an assistant engineer—have been suspended while Delhi Metro is looking to take legal action against the contractor, Gammon India, and the design consultant, Arch.
    “The detailing of reinforcement as provided in the approved drawing has not been adhered to by the contractor. The DMRC engineer also failed to detect the lapses before allowing further casting of the girder,” said DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal.
    The MD of DMRC said to avoid this type of failure in the construction monitoring methodology, photographic evidence of the material used should be taken before any concreting is done.

Considering the high density of population and limited land area, the people of the Union Territory (UT) region of Mahe will, in all probability, oppose Kerala’s plan to route the proposed High Speed Rail Corridor through the UT, Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office V. Narayanasamy has said.

The Minister was talking to mediapersons after inaugurating a series of development works here on Saturday.

A delegation would meet Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to seek alterations in the alignment of the proposed line.

Mr. Narayanasamy said he had earmarked Rs.1.25 crore out of his MP fund of Rs.5 crore for development activities in Mahe. This included Rs.40 lakh for the renovation of Tagore Park and Rs.45 lakh for a new building of Government Lower Primary School, Palloor North. The extension of the riverside walkway till the beach would be get Rs.40 lakh, he said.

The Minister said Rs.2.5 crore had been sanctioned for repair of the national highway stretch passing through Mahe. The work would commence before the next monsoon. A desalination plant would be set up using Rs.5 crore with the support of the Department of Atomic Energy, he said.

The defects of the Mahe bridge would be rectified. The proposal to construct a new bridge would also be examined, he said.

The Minister flagged off the Mangalore Central - Puducherry express (train number 16858) at the Mahe railway station. Addressing a gathering there, he said with the launch of the service, Mahe would have two trains connecting Puducherry. Another would be added in 2014. The Mangalore - Coimbatore intercity express and the Yeshwantpur - Kannur Express would stop at Mahe from October, he added.

The Minister said that he would seek early clearance for land allocation for a Kendriya Vidyalaya. The Home Ministry usually provided land on lease for a maximum of 19 years and as Kendriya Vidyalaya was seeking a 99-year lease, a special request would be made. Village Resource Centre by ISRO

NEW DELHI: The dilapidated and dismal state of coaches has landed the Indian Railways in trouble with the consumer disputes redressal forum. The central district forum has asked the chairman of Indian Railways to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh to a man who injured his fingers while travelling on the Sapt Kranti Express.Complainant Bharat Bhushan Dinkar, a resident of west Vinod Nagar, was travelling from Muzaffarpur Junction in Bihar to Anand Vihar railway station on August 21. "It is alleged that when he was reaching for his upper berth, his fingers hit the moving overhead fan which was loosely fitted with a broken cover," said the forum.As per the court order, under president C K Chaturvedi, the complainant suffered soft tissue injury to the index, middle and ring finger on his right hand. "He was referred to RML Hospital where he was diagnosed with a fracture of the middle finger and laceration to distal phalanx and ring finger,'' said the court order. The complainant said that, being an advocate, his work suffered as he could not work on his laptop or handle papers due to the injury.While the Indian Railways disputed territorial jurisdiction of the forum by saying that the complaint should be filed in Bihar, the court noted that "the Indian Railways is one entity".

Trichy: A train accident was averted just in time on Saturday when a loco pilot of the Vaigai Express bound for Chennai from Madurai noticed a crack on the track near Mannaparai.
According to sources,a rail over-bridge-cum-subway was being constructed for vehicles at the Ranga Vilas railway gate near Manapparai.However,due to the recent spell of rain,construction along the subway was stopped.Since the soil in that area had eroded and the ballast having fallen into the subway,the fishplates on the track started becoming visible underneath.
On Saturday,the Vaigai Express,which passes along the route at 8.15am,was about to cross the stretch and had slowed down due to the speed restriction.The loco pilot suddenly noticed a small crack next to a fish plate that prompted him to stop the train a few metres before the spot.He alerted the railway authorities who came to repair the stretch.The welding work was completed in 20 minutes.The Vaigai Express finally reached Trichy station at 9.30am after a 30-minute delay.

Centre's move adds fuel to fire in this inflationary situation, says CM

Terming the 15 per cent hike in railway freight charges, which will come into effect from Octotber 1 “unfair”, chief minister J.
Jayalalithaa has urged the Centre to withdraw the hike in view of the present conditions of rising inflation.

She said the Centre’s move to hike the railway freight was “like adding fuel to fire ” as it had come against the backdrop of spiralling cost of essential commodities triggered by frequent hike in the prices of petroleum products.

“When the railway freight movement is uniform throughout the year, classifying the nine-month period from October-June as busy season artificially and charging busy season rates is unfair,” Ms Jayal

alithaa said. She said the Railways under its dynamic pricing policy has classified July-September as lean season and October-June as a busy season. The freight rates were higher during the busy season.
She stated that during the period from April to June 2011, the Centre had raised the freight charges for coal by five per cent and seven per cent for

other products. “From October 2011 to June 2012, the freight charges for all products were hiked by ten per cent and from October 2012 to June 2013, the Centre had the freight charges for food grains and chemical fertilisers fixed at ten per cent each and 12 per cent for other products for the busy season,” the chief minister said and added that this was proposed to be hiked further by 15 per cent from October 1.
As a result of this hike, there will be an all-round increase in the prices of essential commodities and also in the raw material prices for factories resulting in higher inflation. Further, this would hurt the people and the economy rather than stabilising it, she said flaying the Centre for its decision to enhance the charges.

Denouncing the railway freight tariff hike as a measure that would accelerate inflation and further affect the economy and people, Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa today urged the Centre to immediately withdraw the increase.“At a time when inflation is skyrocketing due to continuous increase in the price of petroleum products, the hike in railway freight tariff by the Centre is akin to adding fuel to fire,” Miss Jayalalithaa said in a statement here.Criticising the 'dynamic pricing policy' being followed by the Centre in classifying railway freight tariff under ' busy and lean season' categories, she said the classification was artificial and unjustified.“Due to the hike in tariff, the price of all essential commodities and raw materials for industries like cement, coal and iron will increase.”When the cost of food products is already witnessing a continuous increase, the hike in railway tariff will have a spiraling effect and lead to further inflation, she said.
