उत्तर रेलवे के महाप्रबंधक वी.के. गुप्ता ने बुधवार शाम पुरानी दिल्ली रेलवे स्टेशन का औचक निरीक्षण किया। निरीक्षण के दौरान उन्होंने स्टेशन की सफाई व्यवस्था पर नाखुशी जाहिर की और इसे दुरुस्त करने का निर्देश अधिकारियों को दिया।
महाप्रबंधक ने लगभग चार घंटे तक स्टेशन के विभिन्न विभागों और यात्री सुविधाओं का निरीक्षण किया। यात्रियों को मालूम चला कि महाप्रबंधक निरीक्षण कर रहे हैं तो वे अपनी शिकायतें लेकर उनके पास पहुंच गए। उधर स्टेशन अधिकारियों एवं कर्मचारियों में भी हड़कंप मच गया। महाप्रबंधक ने प्लेटफॉर्म नंबर दस पर चल रहे निर्माण कार्य का भी निरीक्षण किया। इसके बाद प्लेटफॉर्म नंबर 16 पर पहुंचे, जहां की सफाई व्यवस्था समेत अन्य प्रबंधों से वे असंतुष्ट दिखे। इन्हें दुरुस्त करने का निर्देश अपने मातहतों को दिया। वे रेलवे स्टेशन मास्टर कार्यालय तथा बुकिंग कार्यालय भी गए। इसके बाद चीफ स्टेशन मास्टर के दफ्तर पहुंचे। इसी बीच रेवाड़ी और शामली जाने वाले यात्रियों को इस बारे में जानकारी मिली तो वे भी वहां पहुंच गए। प्रबंधक से उन्होंने बताया कि उनकी ट्रेन अक्सर देर हो जाती है। गाड़ी का प्लेटफॉर्म भी बदल दिया जाता है। ऐसे में उन्हें परेशानी का सामना करना पड़ता है।

SURAT/VADODARA/BHARUCH: Lakhs of commuters were stranded on railway platforms and highways on Wednesday as continuous downpour on the third day in south Gujarat forced cancellation of 18 trains and jammed all the main roads and highways.

The national highway 8, the arterial link between Ahmedabad and Mumbai, witnessed a nearly 30-km-long traffic jam near Bharuch on both ends of Sardar Bridge on Narmada.

Police teams are working to clear the traffic but it will take several hours. “The jam on NH8 near Bharuch is due to potholes on Sardar Bridge. It is taking a long time for the vehicles to cross it and that has led to the major jam,” Bharuch SP Bipin Ahire said.

Railway officials said a breach on tracks between Vadodara and Bharuch has forced the cancellation of trains going to Surat and Mumbai. “Important trains like Shatabdi Express were moved along the down track that was functional,” said an official.

With little sign of rain abating, rail and road traffic disruptions are likely to continue for some time.

Meanwhile, Surat, Vadodara and Bharuch continued to reel under rain fury on Wednesday. Situation was particularly grim in Karjan taluka of Vadodara where many people are reported to be stranded amid flood waters. The Army has been kept on stand-by to tackle any eventuality. Over 1,200 people stranded in 16 villages in Karjan, Padra and Vadodara (rural) were rescued.

Vadodara remained on the edge for the second day as Vishwamitri continued to flow above the danger mark at 28.6 feet. Authorities closed a bridge at Kalaghoda as river swelled dangerously.

Surat city was battered by 211mm in eight hours since Wednesday morning, leaving all the major areas in knee-deep waters. Five creeks in the city started overflowing due to massive influx of water due to heavy rains in the adjoining talukas, which received an average 200mm rainfall.

The implementation of the meter system for autorickshaws has been a blow to the pre-paid services at Chennai Central Station and Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) in Koyambedu.Over the last few days, barely 10 per cent of registered auto drivers have showed up at these stands, causing passengers immense difficulties.“Auto drivers registered at the prepaid stands go by a fixed rate, but they are free to pick up passengers on their way back to the stand here. However, many of us are being stopped by the police, who ask us where our meter is.  After over 130 of us were fined recently, many of us stopped coming here and prefer to stay at home, or drive in our own areas,” said a senior member of the Central Station Prepaid Auto Drivers and Commuters Welfare Association.The association has over 370 registered autos, but this week, fewer than 60 drivers have reported for work.Passengers at Central say there are no prepaid autos after 6 p.m. The stand at Central had been closed for two months due to nearby Metro Rail work, and re-opened only on September 12, three days before the deadline for meters.“There are very few vehicles now and it is a big problem for single travellers with only a few bags. Cabs charge at least Rs. 90 more,” said Prem Kumar who works in Tiruchi and comes to Chennai on weekends.

The drivers say that despite having valid documents, they have been fined because their meters are not ready. “Because of the shortage of electronic meters, most of us who went to get our meters calibrated have been asked to come back after a month,” said Uma Maheswari, who has already been fined once.  “Many of us come only between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m. to avoid checking and operate for the rest of the day only in our areas,” said Dasan, a driver from Ambattur.

CMBT, Koyembedu where there are nearly 200 registered prepaid autos, has been facing the same problem. “We requested officials to spare prepaid autos from fines but they are not doing so. On some days, there are just about 20 autos here, and many drivers are not even willing to take a savaari because they don’t want to be caught while coming back,” said a driver.

Members of auto associations said they expected these stands to be fully functional in about two months as soon as the drivers get their meters ready. 

“The transport department needs to know that the demand for prepaid autos is very high and by not letting us ply, it is passengers and tourists who are being inconvenienced,” said an auto driver at Central Station.

Gulbarga: Pilgrims from the state will be able to travel directly by train to the Mata Vaishnodevi temple in Jammu and Kashmir once work on laying the 80 km long track  between Udhampur and Khatra stations is completed in a month, according to railway minister Malikarjun Kharge.

Flagging off a daily train service between Solapur and Yeshwantpur here on Tuesday, he said a direct train would be introduced between Bengaluru and Khatra station once the track work was completed .

The minister also revealed that a new train would be introduced between Bengaluru and the Ajmer dargah in Rajashthan via Guntakal and Gulbarga for the benefit of devotees.

Explaining the various initiatives taken by his ministry to improve train services, Kharge lamented that the state government was not showing enough interest in strengthening Karnataka’s rail network.

“Many states are pestering us for various projects. But here we have to repeatedly plead with the state government (to take advantage of the benefits on offer)” he said,  requesting former legislator from Gadag, D.R. Patil, who was on the dais, to cooperate with the ministry on  the proposed Wadi-Gadag railway line. “If Mr Patil help us in getting 40 to 50 acres of land and if the state government meets 50 per cent of the cost estimated at Rs 2,600 crore, we can simultaneously start the work from both ends,” he added.

While observing that the  recession had affected the railways too, the minister said his ministry could fail to meet its targets  as a result. “Although revenue collection  is higher than last year’s, I  doubt  we ‘ll be able to achieve the targets. We have not been able to give thrust to some projects In view of revenue shortfall,” he added.

After a lull of several months following a crackdown by the Government Railway Police, groups of youths are back to performing stunts on Mumbai’s local trains.According to complaints filed by passengers with the GRP, groups of youth often skate on platforms holding on to moving trains and jump on board in the nick of time as their coach moves out of the station. “Passengers have complained that the youths also harass women standing on the platforms,” PP Pandey, an officer of the GRP stationed at Borivali in the Western Railway said.The stunt performances came to light last year after several youths posted visuals of their acts on social networking sites. “Most of the boys are in the 15 to 25 year age groups and do these things out of peer pressure,” says an official of the Central Railway.Following complaints, the authorities carried out raids at several railway stations this week with police personnel in plain clothes nabbing 25 boys over two days.

In all, 24 police personnel were deployed at several stations to nab these boys. While some of them recorded their stunts on mobile phones to show off among their peers, the police personnel themselves filmed several of them trying various tricks on board moving trains.

GRP officials say most of the boys picked up were below 18 years of age and were influenced by older boys they were associating with.

It appears that railway ticketing site IRCTC has revamped its journey planner to sport a different look and user experience. While it sounds fancy, this is not the complete overhaul which the government has promised.

The new look, being rolled out slowly to its 4 cr odd registered users, can throw some of the seasoned users off with the design. The key difference in the new IRCTC Journey Planner is in the second screen which appears after you key in your journey details and click “Find Trains.”

IRCTC is India’s largest online ticketing website. Earlier this month, a record number of 5.72 lakh tickets were booked online on the site. On an average, the site books nearly 4 lakh tickets. While presenting the railway budget this year, the Railway Minister had said that the department will overhaul the site to support 6x more users and 3x more tickets per minute.

The confusing part is the tiny “Book Now” button which appears in the next screen. It is easy to miss. We booked a Tatkal ticket this morning and the site appears to be slightly faster, but that could be just us.

Recently, the ticketing arm of Indian railways launched its e-commerce site in partnership with Yebhi.com last month.  IRCTC’s online shopping site powered by Yebhi is live at shop.irctc.co.in and sells clothing, accessories, home decor and electronics.

In July, e-commerce company Yebhi had won the deal from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), to provide a white labeled solution to enable e-commerce on their site.
