INDIA: Konkan Railway has begun equipping its stations with 'bio-toilets' which used anaerobic biodigester technology developed by the Defence Research & Development Organisation for use in remote areas.

The railway said the maintenance-free toilets can be installed in two days rather than the two months needed for standard toilets which require a sewer or septic tank, and are 70% cheaper at Rs30 000.

The bacterial breakdown of waste produces gas which can be utilised as fuel and clean odourless water which can be extracted for irrigation

Traffic on Mysore-Nanjangud railway line came to a standstill for more than one hour due to a protest against an accident which claimed the legs of a woman who fell under a train.Rathnamma (59), a native of Thandavapura, suffered grievous injuries and was shifted to K R Hospital.She had come to her daughter’s house in Badanaval  village and was at the railway station to board a train to Chamarajnagar when she lost balance, slipped and fell under the Chamarajnagar-Mysore passenger train. She lost both her legs though passengers tried to pull the emergency chain to stop the moving train.Enraged, villagers and passengers accused the driver and staff of callousness and sat on the track in protest, blocking traffic for more than 90 minutes. They also demanded compensation for her from the Railways.The Railway police refused to accept their complaint. The train was finally allowed to leave at 3.10 pm.

வாரம் மூன்று முறை இயக்கப்படும் மன்னார்குடி-திருப்பதி-மன்னார்குடி பாமணி எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயில், செப்டம்பர், 15ம் தேதி முதல் (இன்று), 2014ம் ஆண்டு மார்ச், 14ம் தேதி வரை, ஆறு மாதங்கள் ஒரு நிமிடம் மட்டும் போளூர் ரயில்வே ஸ்டேஷனில் நிறுத்தப்படும்.
அதன்படி, மன்னார்குடி-திருப்பதி செல்லும் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் ரயில் பகல், 11.54 மணிக்கு போளூருக்கு வரும். 11.55 மணிக்கு புறப்பட்டு செல்லும். அதேபோல திருப்பதி-மன்னார்குடி செல்லும் ரயில் மதியம் 2.24க்கு போளூரில் நின்று, 2.25க்கு புறப்பட்டு செல்லும்.
இவ்வாறு அதில் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளது.

PANAJI: PWD will draw up plans for the construction of a bridge over railway tracks on level crossing 25 at Cansaulim to allow for the smooth flow of traffic on the busy major district road from Mobor-Cavelossim to Dabolim airport.Chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who listened to the grievances of villagers from Cansaulim, Arossim and Cuelim along with environment minister Alina Saldanha, instructed PWD officials to pursue the project and entrust it to Goa state infrastructure development corporation.He also asked them to obtain approvals from the South Western Railway authorities. Land acquisition for it will soon commence. Late Matanhy Saldanha had already reserved his land for the bridge. The overhead link was a long-pending request of the CAC villagers, as traffic comes to a halt when trains pass by.

Chandigarh: The General Manager of Northern Railway has been penalised for failing to refund Rs 320 to the complainant who had booked a ticket and later got it cancelled. The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has also penalised the Chief Reservation Supervisor, Chandigarh, and directed both the respondents to pay Rs 2,500 for mental agony to the complainant.Instead of the prescribed deduction of Rs 120, an amount of Rs 440 was deducted from the cost of the ticket paid by the complainant. The complainant, NK Singla, a resident of Zirakpur, had paid Rs 3,712 for his ticket.However, owing to unavoidable circumstances, the complainant had to get his Circular Tour Ticket cancelled four days prior to the date of journey.The complainant alleged that the money was deducted for three separate tickets while it was a circular tour ticket for three laps of journey.The opposite parties in their joint reply took the objection that the complainant got the tickets cancelled in New Delhi and hence, no cause of action had arisen at Chandigarh.The deduction of Rs 440 is unjustified as only cancellation charges should have been recovered only once and not for each lap of journey, held the forum.

जागरण संवाददाता, वाराणसी : कैंट रेलवे स्टेशन व उसका यार्ड, सेफ्टी में मामले में 70 फीसद सही पाया गया जबकि 30 प्रतिशत सुधार की जरूरत है। सभी प्वाइंटों का आडिट करने के बाद शुक्रवार को नई दिल्ली से आए उत्तर रेलवे के मुख्य संरक्षा अधिकारी सीबीके सिंह ने यह जानकारी दी।

स्टेशन प्रबंधक कक्ष में मीडिया से अनौपचारिक बातचीत में श्री सिंह ने कहा कि यार्ड में शंटिंग के दौरान घटनाओं को रोकने के लिए जो भी कमी पाई गई है, वह छह माह में दूर कर ली जाएगी। आडिट रिपोर्ट के आधार पर सुधार के लिए प्लान बनाए जाएंगे। अब रही बात मेन लाइन की आडिट की तो कैंट स्टेशन के एरिया में कहीं कोई कमी नहीं मिली।

एक सवाल के जवाब में मुख्य संरक्षा अधिकारी ने बताया कि यार्ड में 202 प्वाइंट (एक पटरी दूसरे से जुड़ना) हैं। इनकी जांच की गई। इनमें लगभग 150 प्वाइंट अच्छी स्थिति में मिले। शेष में सुधार की आवश्यकता महसूस की गई। इन्हें भी ठीक कर दिया जाए तो कैंट स्टेशन का यार्ड नो एक्सीडेंटल जोन बन सकता है।

An official reply to an RTI query revealed that more than half the long-distance trains on Western and Central Railway travel without any Railway Protection Force staff; authorities claim a lack of manpower, as thousands of posts lie vacant. September 16, 2013 MUMBAI Vedika Chaubey

With rising incidences of crimes on long-distance trains, you would expect security to be beefed up. Sadly, most trains, both on Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR), are travelling without security staff from the Railway Protection Force (RPF).According to the official reply to an RTI application filed in August by Anis Khan, a railway activist, more than half of the trains running on Central and Western Railway are unattended by security staff from the RPF.Of the 116 trains that run every day (includes trains on both CR and WR), only 59 trains have RPF escorts on them.The rest of the trains travel without any security, because the RPF doesn’t have the adequate number of staff.On an average, CR operates a total of 76 long-distance trains from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT), and Dadar Terminus. WR operates around 40 trains from Mumbai Central and Bandra Terminus. These numbers exclude trains like summer special, Diwali special etc.

“Looking at the increasing crime rate in trains, the railway authorities should provide security to the passengers. Security staff should be deployed in trains, especially for the female passengers,” said Khan. MiD DAY had recently carried a string of reports on violent attacks on female train passengers in the city.

Lucky few Trains like Rajdhani Express, August Kranti and other VVIP trains are checked thoroughly by RPF staff before the train departs for its destination. According to Khan, this preferential treatment is given because the fares for these trains are higher. “This is because they pay higher fare. In the other trains, passengers travel in sleeper coaches and pay less fare,” said Khan.

A few trains that do get the privilege of having RPF security on-board are Flying Rani, Avantika Express, Saurashtra Mail and Jaipur Superfast on the Western line, among others.

The RPF is in charge of protecting railway properties, passengers and passenger areas. It is their duty to escort passengers on long-distance trains. The staff is equipped with walkie-talkies, ammunition and FIR forms for the benefit of passengers, when they travel on-board long-distance trains.

Vacant posts Interestingly, the RPF has nearly 10,000 posts lying vacant all over India. Out of the sanctioned strength for CR and WR, around 25-30 per cent are lying vacant (See box for more details). A senior inspector from the CR division of RPF clarified, “We have recently recruited home guards, but we cannot deploy them alone at the important junctions.

There, we absolutely have to deploy RPF staff with them. Even for baggage scanner machines, we have to have RPF staff with the home guards.”

Officialspeak Atul Rane, Chief PRO, Central Railway, said, “Considering the available manpower, we deploy them in the sensitive and important trains. Our efforts are on to increase the security staff.”

Sunil Singh, PRO, Western Railway, said, “We always ensure that we give RPF or GRP security force to trains departing from Mumbai in the night. For trains that travel during the day, we provide RPF security on a priority basis, depending on availability of staff. We are in the process of recruiting more staff.
