Sonarpur station turned into a battle zone on Friday as people protested a railway decision to run a train from Canning instead of Sonarpur on the southern fringe.Their grouse was not getting seats on Sealdah-bound local trains because by the time they reach Sonarpur from Canning — which is further south — they are always packed with people. Hence they wanted another train to originate from Sonarpur. They alleged that passengers from a Canning-Sealdah train alight at the station and board a Sonarpur local train that leaves four minutes later. “This leads to overcrowding in both trains,” a commuter said.Eyewitnesses said a group of 50 passengers started the protest around 8.15am and more people joined in soon after. They jumped on the tracks to block trains and some of the protesters threw banana leaves at the overhead power supply cables.Railway Protection Force and Government Railway Police personnel initially tried to convince the people to withdraw the blockade. “As they refused, a lathicharge was ordered. This triggered a violent retaliation from the crowd,” the eyewitness said. |

Union Minister for Railways M. Mallikarjun Kharge will be formally inaugurating the work on doubling of rail line between Hosadurga Road and Chikjajur Junction at a function on September 8 at 12.30 p.m. at Sri Siddarameshwar PU College in Mallappanahalli of Hosadurga taluk. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will preside over the function.According to sources, once completed, the project will give the much-needed boost to the growth of the region, besides providing relief to commuters. The Hosadurga Road-Chikjajur Junction is a part of the Bangalore-Arsikere-Birur-Davangere-Hubli route of South Western Railway, which was originally a meter gauge line, constructed in 1889 by the then Mysore State Railways and converted later into broad gauge during 1994-95.The traffic on the Arsikere-Chikjajur route got saturated as the line capacity utilisation exceeded expectations, prompting the Railways to double the Arsikere and Chikjajur lines, in phases. The doubling of rail line between Arsikere and Ajjampura has already been completed and the work on Ajjampura-Hosadurga stretch, which is in the advanced stage, is likely to be completed this year. The doubling of Hosadurga Road-Chikjajur Junction rail line is the last phase of the Arsikere-Chikjajur doubling project. The detailed project of doubling the Hosadurga Road-Chikjajur Junction line comprising 29.65 km and estimated to cost Rs. 203.4 crore, was sanctioned by Mr. Kharge in July this year. The doubling work is expected to be completed in about two and half years, according to sources. |

Ludhiana: Though the Railway authorities plan several projects for the safety of women passengers every year, it seems to be unconcerned about its own women employees. There are several railway workshops and departments where women employees have to use common toilets. In the absence of separate urinals and toilets, the women staff at the railway station face a lot of inconvenience. They have to use washroom of other offices or nearby quarters.According to the railway employees, a huge number of women employees work in the railway workshops and other departments like carriage and wagon (C&W), electric shed, diesel shed, etc.The women employees, who work at the railway booking counters, have the facility of separate washrooms. Moreover, they can use the washrooms meant for passengers.Raising the issue, the office bearers of the Uttriya Railway Mazdoor Union (URMU) has wrote to the higher authorities in Northern Railway, demanding the construction of separate washroom and rest rooms for women employees.General secretary of the Uttriya Railway Mazdoor Union, Ferozepur Division, ML Prashar said: "The contribution of the women employees to the Railways is no less than that of the man employees. The railway authorities must make proper arrangements for them so they can perform their duties safely. We have raised this issue and will pressurise the authorities to construct separate washrooms for women employees soon". |
