A delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs) from Karnataka, led by MP of Dharwad and State BJP president Pralhad Joshi urged the Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge to take steps to launch the services of new trains as announced in the Railway Budget of 2013-14.The delegation, comprising of MPs G.M. Siddheshwar, Ramesh Jigajinagi and P.C. Gaddigoudar, met Mr. Kharge in New Delhi on Tuesday and urged him to take requisite steps. The delegation told Mr. Kharge that the new train between Hubli-Mumbai was being stopped at Kurla, which made it difficult for passengers to proceed to other places and also other localities within Mumbai. Extending the train up to Dadar would help passengers, they said. They also told Mr. Kharge that the present timings of the new train was inconvenient. They said that although the announcement regarding running the Yashwanthpur-Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express via Tumkur, Davanagere and Hubli-Dharwad for two more days in a week had been made, it was not yet running according to the announcement.Mr. Joshi said that although the survey on a new railway line between Dharwad and Belgaum via Bailhongal had been completed two years ago, nothing was being done. |

CHENNAI: Passengers booked on a new train that was introduced between Chennai Egmore and Thanjavur had a tough time after the train that started from Egmore did not stop at Mambalam railway station on Sunday. However, railways have not taken action against the loco pilot because it was a rare occurrence.Sources said the driver realised the mistake soon after he crossed station and waited at Tambaram railway station till all passengers boarded. The passengers were brought by a suburban train and the loco pilot did not start the train till all of them boarded," an official said. He said the loco pilot had the list of scheduled stops, speed restrictions, stretches where train should be driven cautiously. "For some reason he missed the Mambalam stop."A majority of outbound trains from Egmore don't have a stop at Mambalam. This might have lead to the mistake, said a source. Only three or four outbound trains stop at Mambalam while all inbound trains stop at the railway station. It was the first day of the service when the loco pilot made the mistake. Uzhavan Express was introduced on September 1. |

Railways have moved to alleviate the increasing financial burden on its system on account of the rising fuel prices. It has installed a new fuel saving device called Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) in Diesel Locomotives, which will result in saving of more than Rs 20 lakh per locomotive annually. The Research Development Standard Organisation (RDSO), the research wing of Indian Railways, is also in the process of developing a highly fuel efficient, Common Rail Electronic Direct Fuel Injection (CReDI) system for its fleet of diesel locomotives.“In APU System main Engine shuts down and small 25 HP Engine starts, and charges batteries and air brake pipes, when loco idles for more than 10 minutes. The diesel engine of APU consumes only three litres of diesel per hour in comparison to 25 litres by the main engine. Expected savings per loco fitted with APU is Rs 20 lakh per year on account of saving in fuel oil only,” a railway official said.APU is a self-contained unit containing a small diesel engine coupled to a compressor and alternator for battery charging. It has its own set of controls, accessories and is integrated to the existing microprocessor control system of locomotive.Similarly, Railways has started development of the CReDI for its fleet of diesel locomotives. “Final testing of the system will be done at the large bore engine laboratory of RDSO. Fuel savings in the range of 3 to 4 per cent and emissions reductions by about 20-30% are expected. Once the systems are implemented on the complete fleet of locomotives, savings will be about Rs 500-600 crore annually,” officials said. These types of systems are being used on all road diesel vehicles including passenger cars and have helped reduce fuel consumption and emissions of harmful pollutants from these vehicles. In the common rail systems, fuel at a high pressure (1600 bars) is injected into the cylinder by using a magnetic valve. It is possible to have multiple injections in the cylinder thereby reducing stress on the cylinder parts and reduce fuel consumption and emissions at the same time. |

PUNE: The state government will not impose cess on the sale of petrol and diesel in the city to raise funds for the Pune Metro project.Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan convened a meeting of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the state urban development department officials on Tuesday. The project was discussed with the finance department on Wednesday. The project's proposal is likely to be tabled before the state cabinet next month. The project for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad includes two routes with a total length of 31.5 km. The first route is between Vanaz and Ramwadi in Pune and the second route is between Pimpri Chinchwad and Swargate. As per the revised costs in 2013, the metro rail project will cost Rs 10,183 crore."The state government is discussing the financial model for the project. Earlier, the government was mulling a metro cess on the sale of petrol and diesel in the city. However, in the view of the public indignation against inflation and constant rise in fuel prices, the state has decided shelve this option," a senior state government official said.Tax on commercial vehicles entering Pune metropolitan area and levy of additional charges on new registration of vehicles is being considered. "There are suggestions of a green cess on existing vehicles. But these options to raise funds may also run into opposition. The state and the PMC have to look for options that will go down well with citizens," he added. |
