Kanyakumari: With the counselling dates for engineering courses by Anna University scheduled from June 21 to July 30, rail users from Kanyakumari district have appealed to the railway authorities to operate special trains for the benefit of students and parents during this period. According to the rail users, more number of students is expected to attend the counselling this year. But, there not many trains originating from the district to reach Chennai where the counselling is held. There are only three daily trains - Kanyakumari - Chennai Express, Thiruvananthapuram - Chennai Ananthapuri Express and Guruvayur - Chennai Express to Chennai in addition to five weekly trains and one bi-weekly trains in the section. However, getting reservation in these trains is near impossible, they said.Ignashius Stany, 17, from Thuckalay is planning to attend the counselling this year. "We have not decided the mode of travel yet but train journey will be more comfortable since travelling by bus for more than 12 hours and facing the counselling will be very tiring," he said. His father, Maria Johnson said that the bus fares are generally costlier when compared to the train and the fares may be hiked by the bus operators during the counselling time. "We may have to shell out more than Rs 1000 per head in private buses - the luxury ones for comfort and imagine the plight of poor students and their parents", Johnson who is a bank staff commented. |

The 18-km-long section between Banihal in Jammu and Qazigund in Kashmir, which will provide an all-weather surface link to the valley, will have only two stations during its 18 km journey.In addition to these stations, a halt station is also being provided at Hillar village in Anantnag district for the convenience of local public."It was a challenging task. Besides the difficult terrain, land was acquired for the Kashmir rail link project in adverse law and order situation in the state," GM said.The much-awaited railway section will be launched on June 25 when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi jointly flag off the first train.The section, which includes an 11-km-long tunnel, will reduce the distance from 35 km to 18 kms. It has been constructed at a cost of Rs.1,691 crore.Train service is already operational within Kashmir valley between Qazigund and Baramulla in north Kashmir."The mandatory inspection of the track by Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is slated on June 18 and after that the line is expected to open on June 25," Northern Railway General Manager V K Gupta said.Trial run on this section was successfully done on December 28 last year and since then trains carrying stones are running on regular basis. |

MANGALORE :The Southern Railways has appealed to land owners near railway tracks to cut trees or prune the branches leaning towards the track.A press release by the Palakkad division of Southern Railway said here on Saturday that it will help in the smooth operation of trains during the monsoon season.Incidents of trees falling on the railway track, especially in Malabar area, are increasing due to heavy rains in the region. This disturbs the rail traffic and causes hardship to travellers, the release said.“Trees leaning towards railway track from private land create threat to railways. They may fall at any time on running train or on the track. This may cause serious injury or even death to the travelling public and damage to the railway properties. In addition, it could lead to disruption of traffic arising out of accidents,” the release said. |
