Amritsar:Acting on a tip-off, the mobile wing of the Excise and Taxation Department today seized gold jewellery worth over Rs 27 lakh from a city resident who was travelling in the Amritsar-bound Pashchim Express train.The accused Kapil Kumar is from famous gold ornament market Guru Bazaar in the old walled city here. He reportedly boarded the train from Sabzi Mandi in Delhi.Reports said the gold weighing 1.245 kg was hidden in a sweets box. The trader had three boxes of sweets of which one was stuffed with gold jewellery. PS Randhawa, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner (mobile wing), said Kapil was unable to produce any documents such as bill or mandatory electronic information collection (EIC) receipt.“After evaluation, the department imposed Rs 13.90 lakh penalty (51.1 per cent of the total value of the seized jewellery),” said Randhawa.During the last financial year, the department imposed Rs 1.56 crore financial penalty on such defaulters while it has already imposed Rs 19 lakh penalty to non-registered traders caught bringing gold and diamond jewellery without valid documents this month so far. As per the Excise and Taxation norms, the traders ferrying precious goods worth over Rs 2 lakh by road, rail or air are required to inform the department in advance through EIC. |

Business Line reported that East Central Railway has posted a 8.29% growth in originating freight traffic in 2012-13 at 102.53 million tonnes over 94.68 million tonnes in 2011-12.Coal accounts for the largest share of traffic at more than 90%. During the period under review, coal throughput was 93.34 million tonnes up from 86.2 million tonnes in the previous year.ECR sources attribute it to improved loading at mines under all the three coal companies served by it. Thus, loading at Central Coalfields Ltd’s mines was 41.51 million tonnes, compared to 37.34 in 2011-12. The corresponding figures for other coal companies were: Northern Coalfields Ltd 27.43 million tonnes (25.68 million tonnes) and Bharat Coking Coal Ltd 18.5 million tonnes (17.12 million tonnes).Besides, coal loading at West Bokaro mines belonging to Tata Steel, Chasnala mines belonging to IISCO also showed improvement. Loading of maize showed significant improvement at 388 rakes totalling 1.6 million tonnes. |

LUCKNOW: Additional session judge Lallu Singh on Friday acquitted IASShashiBhusanLalSushil in the Lucknow Mail attempt to rape case. The court did not find adequate evidence against the officer. The IAS was challaned by GRP for attempting to commit rape on a passenger. The victim stated during trial that she suspected that the officer who boarded from Ghaziabad had bad eyes on her when her mother went to toilet while the Lucknow Mail arrived near Sandila. The victim's mother had lodged FIR on October 1, 2012 that her daughter told that the officer touched her with bad intention after he boarded at Ghaziabad. The police had chargesheeted him under sections 354,376 read with 511 of IPC. |

GURGAON: A number of industrial projects involving an investment of about Rs 1 lakhcrore, are in the pipeline in Haryana, and are expected to mature in the near future.A spokesman of the Haryana Industries Department said these projects include Lotte, We-Fang, Nestle, Jaguar, UIDAI, Kyo Bearing, Fujitsu, EEL, Kerry, SJN Cylinder, Denso, Panasonic and Reliance Retail.The investment to the tune of Rs 21,000 crore is expected to be made by more than 4,150 entrepreneurs/projects which have been allotted plots by the HSIIDC. Investment of Rs 5,500 crore is envisaged from Maruti Suzuki/Suzuki Motorcycles alone.While the Reliance-METCO project involves an investment of Rs 15,000 crore, investment worth Rs 12,000 crore is expected in power projects. The 135-km Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, planned on BOT basis at an estimated cost of Rs 1,200 crore for construction and Rs 630 crore for land, is under implementation. The economic corridor would be developed along this expressway where a number of townships/ hubs would be developed. Extension of Delhi Metro to Faridabad and Bahadurgarh involves investment of Rs 3,281 crore.The spokesman said that the three early bird projects under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) would involve huge investments. These include MRTS between Gurgaon-Manesar-Bawal (Rs 30,000 crore), Global City Project, District Gurgaon (Rs 6,000 crore), and Logistics Hub, District Rewari, (Rs 3,000 crore). |

The final decision on the proposed Tirunavaya-Guruvayur rail line will be taken by the Cabinet, Minister for Power and Transport Aryadan Mohammed has said. He told a meeting of people’s representatives and other stakeholders here on Friday that further decisions on the rail line would be taken only after the Cabinet decision. The suggestions and opinions of the local people and their representatives will be considered, he said.E.T. Mohammed Basheer, MP; P. Sreeramakrishnan, MLA; District Collector M.C. The temple city of Tirupati would soon have improved railway connectivity from all the major cities in the South India to cope up with the ever increasing influx of pilgrims. This was indicated by Union minister of Railways Pavan Kumar Bansal on Friday at Tirumala after he offered prayers at the hill temple.Mr. Bansal said that it was imperative to augment the railway connectivity to Tirupati as bulk of the devotees visiting the temple town are form the South India cities. At the same time he said that his Ministry was also receiving requests from several North Indian States for enhanced connectivity to the temple city which he said was being considered on a merit basis.He said that conceding to the requests of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam several trains either have been already diverted to Tirupati or allowed to pass through the city.The Ministry is also exploring the possibilities of diverting other trains which he said will be done on merit basis depending on the commuters’ traffic.In the same vein he said that the Tirupati railway station would soon be developed into a world class station with the sustained co-operation of the TTD.In reply to a question, the Minister said that the proposal for enhancing the train services between Chennai and Tirupati was also under consideration.Earlier in the wee hours of the day, Mr. Bansal participated in the ‘Suprabhatam’ and weekly ‘Abhishekam’ of the presiding deity inside the temple along with wife and other family members. |
