Bifurcation of Telangana-Andhra may impact Hyderbad Metro Project

Hyderabad: The proposed bifurcation of the state has cast a shadow on the ‘realty plans’ of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. Hyderabad Metro has been designed as a ‘unique model’ wherein only 55 per cent of the revenue is supposed to come from passengers, and the remaining 45 per cent from property development and commercial activities such as parking charges, advertisements etc.

Only some international Metros such as the ones in Singapore and Hong Kong have adopting this model. The model was conceptualised for the Hyderabad Metro after studying major Metros across the globe wherein it was found that Metro projects are not financially viable if they depend  only on passenger fares for revenue generation.

Accordingly, HMR officials have devised plans to develop 18.5 million square feet along the 72-km Metro corridors in the next five years with an investment of over Rs.2,200 crore. Shopping malls, multiplexes, office space and retail chains are being planned to make the HMR financially viable.
However, the latest developments over Telangana have become a cause of concern for officials who fear that the realty sector in the city would be hit if a new capital is formed for Seemandhra region within 10 years as announced by the UPA government and that Hyderabad would not have the capacity to absorb the massive realty development to be undertaken for the Metro project during this period.

Project developer L&T has decided to develop six million square feet in the first phase and the HMR is scheduled to commence commercial operations between Nagole and Mettuguda by April 2015. The entire 72-km project has to be completed by July 2017 as per the agreement between state government and L&T.

Officials are, however, adopting a cautious approach towards realty development now. They are conducting surveys with various consultancies to ascertain the impact of bifurcation on realty development along the three Metro corridors.

Based on the findings of the surveys, officials are planning to make certain amendments to the realty plans, though they are confident that things will improve in the city in the long run.

MPs meet Union Minister on Nanjangud-Nilambur railway project

Union Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge has assured a team of MPs that his Ministry will seriously consider realising the proposed Nanjangud-Nilambur railway that connects three States in South India.

M.I. Shanavas, MP, said in a release here on Wednesday that the team stressed the need for a railway line that connected eight districts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu for the development of backward districts in the region. The team comprised R. Dhruva Narayan, A. Raja, and M.I. Shanavas, MPs from the Chamaraj Nagar constituency in Karnataka, Nilgiri in Tamil Nadu, and Wayanad respectively.

They also submitted a memorandum on the significance of constructing the railway line, Mr. Shanavas said. According to a revised survey of the Southern Railway, the proposed project could be commissioned at an estimated cost of Rs.4,266.85 crore.

First phase

The first phase of the project aimed at constructing a railway line connecting Sulthan Bathery and Nanjangud at a cost of Rs.641 crore. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had announced recently that that the government would give first priority to the proposed project, Mr. Shanavas said.

A joint meeting of various organisations including the Mysore Chamber of Commerce, Mysore Travel and Tourism Organisation, Wayanad-Nilgiri Railway Action Council, and the Kerala Samajam Mysore Unit held in Mysore on Tuesday decided to exert pressure on governments to realise the project, T.M. Rasheed, convener of the Wayanad-Nilgiri Railway Action Council, said.

The 61st All India Railways Table Tennis (Men & Women) Championship – 2013 concluded today (30/7/2013) at BNR Officers’ Club, S.E.Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach.

TEAM EVENTS
In the Men’s Team Event, South Eastern Railway annexed the Championship Title defeating Central Railway 3-1 in the final. Eastern and South Western Railways became third and fourth respectively. S.E.Railway was represented by Anirban Nandi, Soumyajit Sarkar, Rajib Sarkar, Sumit Kundu and Suman Basak.

In the Women’s Team Event, North East Frontier Railway emerged as Champion while Central Railway became Runners Up. South Eastern and Metro Railway finished third and fourth respectively. North East Frontier Railway was represented by Takme Sarkar, Sukanya Bose, Tania Dutta, Nikita Ghosh and Antara Banerjee.

INDIVIDUAL EVENTS

In the Men’s Individual Event, Anirban Nandi of South Eastern Railway defeated E.Prabhakaran of Southern Railway 4-1 in the final.

In the Women’s Individual Final, Takme Sarkar of North East Frontier Railway defeated Anandita Chakraborty of South Eastern Railway 4-2.



Altogether 12 Zonal Railways participated in the Men’s Team Event and in the Women’s Team Event 6 Zonal Railways took part. As many as 100 sports persons from different Zonal Railways including Nationally and Internationally reputed players took part in the championship.

Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Hon’ble Minister of State for Railways while congratulating the winners of the championship said thatIndian Railways being a great organisation have always taken the lead in promoting sports. Hon’ble MOSR said that the sports persons of railways not only performs in railway championships but also in other National and International Meets. Sportspersons in India need a lot of encouragement, support, facilities and incentives, so that they can concentrate on their training, perform well and develop into International level sports persons who can compete with the best in the world, Hon’ble Minister added. Shri Chowdhury stated that Indian Railways now have 19 Padmashrees, 3 Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardees, 146 Arjuna Awardees, 6 Dronacharya Awardees and 2 Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puraskars. Hon’ble MOSR also witnessed two exhibition matches and congratulated the General Manager, South Eastern Railway, Shri G.C.Agarwal for organising the Championship successfully and in a sporting manner.

Earlier Shri G.C.Agarwal, General Manager, South Eastern Railway and Chief Patron, S.E.Railway Sports Association while welcoming the Hon’ble MOSR, Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said that today is the concluding day of the 61st All India Railways Table Tennis Championship 2013 which has been in a disciplined manner. GM, S.E.Railway spoke about some of the outstanding performances of railway sportspersons. The sportspersons who have performed well in the championship will be selected to represent Indian Railway Team which would motivate them to perform even better in future.

An excursion trip “Delhi Darshan” for one day was organized for 23 Nos. of trainees of SC/TO – B/2013 batch along with two trainers on 27th July, 2013 (Saturday). The trainees visited Lal-Quila (Red-fort), Rajghat & Qutub-Minar.

In a clear indication that the second metro line of Charkop–Bandra – Mankhurd will not take off in the near future, the plot allotted for it has been marked for the third line of Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ. An Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official, requesting anonymity, said, “The plot at Charkop owned by Central Public Works Department was to be used for the second metro line, but now we plan to mark it for use as a casting yard for the underground metro rail.”

The 27-acre plot was to be the casting yard for Charkop–Bandra–Mankhurd line. The MMRDA also plans to start construction of the first underground metro from both the ends of the 32km corridor, simultaneously, thereby saving construction time. “The work will commence at Colaba, Charkop, Aarey (for car depot) and SEEPZ,” said the official.Learning from the experience of the first metro corridor (Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar), officials want more casting yards. For the first route, only one casting yard at Wadala was allotted. Now plans are afoot to have at least four to five of them so that pre-cast segments can be transported to stations along the 32km long route. In June, the development authority received the approval of the union cabinet on the funding of the Rs24,500 crore project. Thereafter, it started

working towards calling for bids. Work on the project is scheduled to begin from early 2014 and will be completed only by March 2019.

Former Union railways minister Pawan Kumar Bansal flagged off the 12450 Goa Sampark Kranti Express on Monday. He said other trains that were announced in the last budget will also be flagged off soon. He said, “Jawaharlal Nehru wanted Chandigarh to be the symbol of progressive India. For this the city needs to be connected to different parts of the country. There will be new trains apart from the extension of the old trains. Frequency of some trains will also be increased.” Five trains proposed in Bansal’s budget includes Kalka-Shirdi Express, Nangal Dam - Hazur Sahib Nanded, Kalka-Katra, Chandigarh-Amritsar and Chandigarh Pataliputra. Modalities are being worked upon to start these trains. If things goes as planned the city will be connected to new places. Yeswanthpur-Nizamuddin which at present runs from of Yeswanthpur in Bangalore City to Nizamuddin in Delhi is expected to be extended till Chandigarh by August end. Ambala-Delhi inter-city express which was scheduled to start from August 9 has been postponed due to some issues regarding the timings. But as per railway officials it will be flagged off soon. The new Northern Railways timetable released in June had Chandigarh-Amritsar Superfast Express announced in the last budget. It was scheduled to depart from Chandigarh daily at 7.30 am and reach Amritsar at 11.55 am. It was to leave from Amritsar at 2.05pm and arrive Chandigarh at 6.30 pm. The train has stoppages at SAS Nagar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar. When asked about the train, Bansal said, “People wanted the train timings such that they could visit the holy city and return the same day. The proposed time table did not suit so it is being discussed afresh.”Kalka-Shirdi Express was also announced in the last budget. This was the first train in the list of trains proposed by Bansal. “It is a new train and we need more coaches for it. AC coaches are not available. I spoke to railway minister regarding this”, he said.Kalka-Katra is another expected train with Chandigarh as one of its stops. “Katra station will be operational shortly. So we are working to start this train too,” he said.Talking about renovation work, Bansal said, “Very soon the Panchkula side of the station will also be renovated and new facilities will be provided to the passengers. The platform was an abode of pigeons that is a serious problem passengers face. We intend to make the station more comfortable.”
