सावन झूला मेला को लेकर श्रद्धालुओं को बेहतर सुविधाएं देने में जुटे रेलवे ने गोंडा से अयोध्या के बीच एक स्पेशल ट्रेन चलाने का निर्णय लिया है। आगामी दस से 21 अगस्त तक यह स्पेशल चलेगी। इसके अतिरिक्त फैजाबाद आने वाले पैसेंजर ट्रेनों को अयोध्या तक बढ़ाने तथा अतिरिक्त कोच लगाने का भी फैसला लिया गया है।
वाणिज्य निरीक्षक अजय सिंह ने बताया कि सावन झूला मेले में गोंडा से आने वाले श्रद्धालुओं के लिए स्पेशल ट्रेन चलाई जाएगी। गोंडा से चलकर अयोध्या आने वाली स्पेशल ट्रेन का नंबर 05080 तथा अयोध्या से चलकर गोंडा जाने वाली ट्रेन का नंबर 05079 है। यह ट्रेन गोंडा से रात्रि दस बजकर 20 मिनट पर चलेगी तो अयोध्या रात साढ़े बारह बजे पहुंचेगी। अयोध्या से यही ट्रेन उसी रात बारह बजकर 55 मिनट पर चलकर भोर में तीन बजकर 25 मिनट पर गोंडा पहुंचेगी। वाणिज्य निरीक्षक ने बताया कि इसके अतिरिक्त फैजाबाद से प्रयाग के बीच चलने वाली पैसेंजर ट्रेनों को अयोध्या तक बढ़ाया जाएगा। लखनऊ से बनारस के बीच चलने वाली पैसेंजर ट्रेन में दो-दो अतिरिक्त कोच लगाए जाएंगे। अयोध्या में रुकने वाले जिन एक्सप्रेस ट्रेनों जिनका ठहराव एक मिनट है उसे बढ़ाकर दो मिनट तथा दो मिनट के ठहराव वाली ट्रेनों का स्टापेज बढ़ाकर पांच किया गया है।

In a clear indication that the second metro line of Charkop–Bandra – Mankhurd will not take off in the near future, the plot allotted for it has been marked for the third line of Colaba–Bandra–SEEPZ. An Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official, requesting anonymity, said, “The plot at Charkop owned by Central Public Works Department was to be used for the second metro line, but now we plan to mark it for use as a casting yard for the underground metro rail.”

The 27-acre plot was to be the casting yard for Charkop–Bandra–Mankhurd line. The MMRDA also plans to start construction of the first underground metro from both the ends of the 32km corridor, simultaneously, thereby saving construction time. “The work will commence at Colaba, Charkop, Aarey (for car depot) and SEEPZ,” said the official.Learning from the experience of the first metro corridor (Versova–Andheri–Ghatkopar), officials want more casting yards. For the first route, only one casting yard at Wadala was allotted. Now plans are afoot to have at least four to five of them so that pre-cast segments can be transported to stations along the 32km long route. In June, the development authority received the approval of the union cabinet on the funding of the Rs24,500 crore project. Thereafter, it started

working towards calling for bids. Work on the project is scheduled to begin from early 2014 and will be completed only by March 2019.

Bifurcation of Telangana-Andhra may impact Hyderbad Metro Project

Hyderabad: The proposed bifurcation of the state has cast a shadow on the ‘realty plans’ of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project. Hyderabad Metro has been designed as a ‘unique model’ wherein only 55 per cent of the revenue is supposed to come from passengers, and the remaining 45 per cent from property development and commercial activities such as parking charges, advertisements etc.

Only some international Metros such as the ones in Singapore and Hong Kong have adopting this model. The model was conceptualised for the Hyderabad Metro after studying major Metros across the globe wherein it was found that Metro projects are not financially viable if they depend  only on passenger fares for revenue generation.

Accordingly, HMR officials have devised plans to develop 18.5 million square feet along the 72-km Metro corridors in the next five years with an investment of over Rs.2,200 crore. Shopping malls, multiplexes, office space and retail chains are being planned to make the HMR financially viable.
However, the latest developments over Telangana have become a cause of concern for officials who fear that the realty sector in the city would be hit if a new capital is formed for Seemandhra region within 10 years as announced by the UPA government and that Hyderabad would not have the capacity to absorb the massive realty development to be undertaken for the Metro project during this period.

Project developer L&T has decided to develop six million square feet in the first phase and the HMR is scheduled to commence commercial operations between Nagole and Mettuguda by April 2015. The entire 72-km project has to be completed by July 2017 as per the agreement between state government and L&T.

Officials are, however, adopting a cautious approach towards realty development now. They are conducting surveys with various consultancies to ascertain the impact of bifurcation on realty development along the three Metro corridors.

Based on the findings of the surveys, officials are planning to make certain amendments to the realty plans, though they are confident that things will improve in the city in the long run.

16 Passenger Trains passing through Coimbatore to be delayed

Chennai: More than 16 passenger trains including the express trains, will be delayed by more than an hour from Saturday since the Southern Railway will be carrying out yard remodelling work as part of gauge conversion between Pollachi and Podanur section.

The trains that will be delayed at different spells from August 10 to 26 are:

Train No.16107 Chennai Egmore-Mangalore Central express will be detained for 60 minutes at Coimbatore on August 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 26 while Train No.16318 Jammutawi-Kanniyakumari Express will be regulated for 105 minutes at Coimbatore on August 15.

Train No.12678 Ernakulam Junction-Bangalore Express will be regulated for 45 minutes at Madukkarai, Train No.13352 Alleppey-Dhanbad-Alleppey Express will be regulated for 75 minutes at Madukkarai, Train No.13351 Dhanbad-Alleppey-Dhanbad Express will be regulated for 60 minutes at Coimbatore, Train No.16107 Chennai Egmore-Mangalore Central Express will be regulated for 120 minutes at Coimbatore and train No 12660 Shalimar-Nagercoil Express will be regulated for 90 minutes at Coimbatore on August 16.

Prospects brighten for Nanjangud-Nilambur Railway Project
MPs meet Union Minister on Nanjangud-Nilambur railway project

Union Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge has assured a team of MPs that his Ministry will seriously consider realising the proposed Nanjangud-Nilambur railway that connects three States in South India.

M.I. Shanavas, MP, said in a release here on Wednesday that the team stressed the need for a railway line that connected eight districts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu for the development of backward districts in the region. The team comprised R. Dhruva Narayan, A. Raja, and M.I. Shanavas, MPs from the Chamaraj Nagar constituency in Karnataka, Nilgiri in Tamil Nadu, and Wayanad respectively.

They also submitted a memorandum on the significance of constructing the railway line, Mr. Shanavas said. According to a revised survey of the Southern Railway, the proposed project could be commissioned at an estimated cost of Rs.4,266.85 crore.

First phase

The first phase of the project aimed at constructing a railway line connecting Sulthan Bathery and Nanjangud at a cost of Rs.641 crore. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had announced recently that that the government would give first priority to the proposed project, Mr. Shanavas said.

A joint meeting of various organisations including the Mysore Chamber of Commerce, Mysore Travel and Tourism Organisation, Wayanad-Nilgiri Railway Action Council, and the Kerala Samajam Mysore Unit held in Mysore on Tuesday decided to exert pressure on governments to realise the project, T.M. Rasheed, convener of the Wayanad-Nilgiri Railway Action Council, said.

The Mamata Banerjee government on Thursday set a schedule for the relocation of settlers from the East-West Metro route in Salt Lake’s Duttabad at a meeting called by urban development minister Firhad Hakim.
At the meeting, Hakim told officials of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC), the implementing agency for the project connecting Salt Lake Sector V to Howrah Maidan, that a survey to ascertain the number of encroachers would start on August 23.
KMRC officials said the presence of the minister, who has emerged as Mamata’s pointman on several key issues, such as the roll-out of the Reliance’s 4G service in the city, suggested a change of stand of the state government, which had earlier refused to help sort out the tangle.
“We have assured KMRC officials that there will be no more hindrance to completing the Duttabad stretch. The state government will extend all cooperation in shifting the encroachers,” Hakim said after the meeting.
The urban development department also allotted two plots with a total area of more than an acre to rehabilitate the encroachers.
The Rs 4,875-crore project is hit by land problem at various points on the 14.7km stretch, including Duttabad.
Gammon India has pulled out of the Duttabad stretch after waiting four years for the government to remove encroachments from a 365-metre stretch where 13 piers were to be built to support the elevated tracks. The company has demanded Rs 19 crore in compensation for losses suffered because of the government’s failure to relocate the families, who have refused to move out.
In March, a survey to identify the Duttabad families to be relocated had to be abandoned after Trinamul supporters, led by an MLA, drove away KMRC and government officials.
Sources, however, said things started looking up after Hakim took the initiative to remove the hurdles following orders from the chief minister.
The KMRC will initially build temporary structures for the encroachers on one of the two plots the urban development department had allotted. Later, permanent houses will be built forthe families on the second plot.
“The state government’s approach looks positive and we hope to complete the construction of the Duttabad stretch within two years. The first phase from Salt Lake to Sealdah should be complete by the end of 2015,” said Hemant Kumar Sharma, the managing director of the KMRC.
He said a tender was floated on Wednesday for the construction of temporary houses for the encroachers.
“We had earlier floated a tender but had to cancel it because there was little chance of the encroachers being shifted,” said Sharma.
The KMRC also extended the tenure of the tender to hire a contractor for laying the tracks at Duttabad. The tender had to be floated after Gammon had withdrawn from the project. Gammon’s departure seemed to have scared off prospective contractors. In June there was only one bidder for the tender, forcing the KMRC to extend it till July.
“Now we have one more bidder and has extended it till August. Wehope that more bidders will express interest for the project,” said Sharma.
The KMRC has prepared an alternative alignment with an increased span that will affect fewer settlers, sources said. The altered blueprint has seven piers instead of the originally planned 13, increasing the distance between every pair from 25 to 90 metres.
However, the KMRC’s problems in the second phase between Sealdah and Howrah Maidan continue. The state government is yet to act on a Calcutta High Court order to remove 90 families from Bowbazar where the Central station will come up.
Litigation and red tape have forced Afcons, the infrastructure arm of Shapoorji Pallonji, to seek Rs 257 crore in compensation for not being able to start work on the Central station-Howrah Maidan stretch in three years.

Seventy per cent of children at Jaipur Railway Station did not have any access to police officials they could trust for protection. In fact, the Railway Police Force was implicated in numerous types of abuse and maltreatment of children including physical abuse, sexual abuse of girls and boys, incarcerating children on false accusations and exploitation for drugs and money.This was revealed in a study by Harvard School of Public Health in collaboration with the Public Health Foundation of India and FXB India Suraksha. The comprehensive study — developed on the SAFE Child Protection model developed by Theresa Betancourt, director of the Research Programme on Children and Global Adversity at Harvard University —was conducted on 49 children between the ages of 8-17 years, living and working on railway station.While trying to understand the safety conditions of these children, the study also revealed that the older children bullied, physically abused and sexually abused the younger children; girls who were orphans or without any caretakers were especially vulnerable.More than three-fourths of the children admitted to using drugs on a regular basis. Children as young as eight were severely addicted and spent most of their days high on whitener solutions. Two out of five children did not have access to health care services.Dr Aruna Bhattacharya of Indian Institute of Public Health said, “The thrust behind the study at Jaipur is to give every child a better future for their fullest physical, psychological, social, cognitive and cultural development.”
