The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today said its trains had carried a record 2.5 million passengers on August 8, the highest ever ridership figure on its network so far since it started services in 2002. The number of passengers was 25,04,900 on that day, which supassed the previous high of 24,25,897 achieved on July 29 this year, a press release from DMRC said. Of these, 3,60,512 passengers were carried on Line 1 ((Dilshad Garden to Rithala), 8,87,003 on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre), 9,81,252 on Line 3 & 4 (Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali), 90,669 on Line 5 (Inderlok/Kirti Nagar to Mundka) and 1,85,464 on Line 6 (Central Secretariat to Badarpur). In addition, the ridership of Airport Express link went up from 10,500 to 12,500 on the same day, it said. DMRC also said that, in a major step towards tackling the issue of overcrowding in the trains, it will introduce the first ever eight-coach train on line 3/4 (Dwarka Sector 21 – NOIDA City Centre/ Vaishali) by the end of this month. Two eight-coach trains are currently being tested for commissioning into service. As many as 24 eight-coach trains are currently running on Line 2 (Jahangirpuri – HUDA City Centre) after the introduction of the first such train on December 24 last year. Delhi Metro recorded the highest ridership on Thursday with over 25 lakh commuters.“Delhi Metro recorded the highest ever ridership figure of 25,04,900 on August 8, surpassing the earlier record set on July 29 when 24,25,897 people travelled by the Metro,” DMRC Executive Director (Corporate Communications) Anuj Dayal said.The highest number of passengers, 9,81,252, used the metro from Dwarka Sec—21 to Noida City Centre/Vaishali.The second highest footfall was recorded on Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre metro line with 8,87,003 passengers.While metro line from Dilshad Garden to Rithala recorded 3,60,512 passengers, Central Secretariat to Badarpur had 1,85,464 commuters and 90,669 passengers used Inderlok/Kirti Nagar to Mundka throughout the day.Meanwhile, the ridership of Airport Express Link has increased from 10,500 to 12,500 passengers on the same day.“In a bid to tackle overcrowding in the metro, DMRC will also introduce the first ever eight coach train on line from Dwarka Sector 21 — NOIDA City Centre/ Vaishali by end of this month,” Dayal said. |

In a bid to fulfil the light refreshment requirements of passengers boarding and alighting trains at railway stations, 45 stations under the Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division are getting new catering stalls. Of this, 39 stations are in Kerala. Stations coming under the lower income D, E categories and halt stations in the F category are getting the stalls. Ten stations are in the D category and 29 are in the E category. The only F station where the stall is being installed is in Tamil Nadu. All these stalls are coming up for the first time in the respective stations. In some stations stalls are coming up on two platforms. Of this, permission has been granted to install stalls in 19 stations. Whereas in some stations, none has responded. “For the stations where no applications have been received, we would invite fresh applications,” said a railway official. |

Chennai: The Madras bench of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has dismissed an application from the general manager of the Integrated Coach Factory (ICF), to constitute a fresh selection committee comprising officials from traffic and accounts of the railway board and conduct a fresh selection for the post of member (technical), Railway Claims Tribunal.Dismissing the petition from Abhay Kumar Khanna who was working as GM, ICF, the bench comprising judicial member K. Elango and administrative member Naresh Gupta held that CAT has no jurisdiction and competence over the issue.Advocate A. Abdul Ajees, counsel for the petitioner, contended that Abhay Kumar Khanna had applied for the post of member (technical), in the Railway Claims Tribunal in response to an advertisement dated January 31, 2013 and attended an interview on April 13, 2013.The selection committee was not constituted as per law. On May 23, 2013, he submitted a representation to the ministry of railways. As there was no response, the official filed this petition. |
