The sole city counter of South Eastern Railway (SER), Ranchi division, near Kutchery Chowk, which used to issue general or unreserved tickets, is out of action for over a year. Don’t believe the signboard that claims otherwise.
No one has bothered to remove the signboard that reads “dakshin purvi railway jansadharan ticket booking”.
Last week, Pithoria resident Sudarshan Mahto discovered the signboard was misleading the hard way.
He wanted to buy an unreserved ticket for the Jasidih-bound Ranchi-Baidyanathdham Express (13320), which departs from Ranchi station at 1.25pm.
“A friend told me I could buy a ticket from the city counter near Kutchery. So I got down at Ratu Road bus stand around noon, took a rickshaw to the booking counter, read the signboard and then discovered the service has stopped,” Mahto said, adding he then hurried to the station.
S.K. Dwivedi, who owns the Kutchery counter, said he had taken the franchisee to book general tickets from SER, Ranchi division, in 2009.
“I am sorry for not removing the signboard,” Dwivedi toldThe Telegraph.
“But it is a fact that for over a year we have stopped issuing general tickets,” he confirmed.
Asked why, he said: “It was not profitable from any angle. We earned Re 1 from every ticket sold from here. On any given day, not more than 100 tickets were sold from the counter. It meant earnings of around Rs 100 per day.”
To add to this, a clause that hit him below the belt was that of surrendering wrongly printed tickets to railway authorities at Ranchi station by noon of the following day.
According to Indian Railways norms, a ticket seller must return a wrongly generated ticket to the nearest railway station by noon of the following day.
Failing that, he must pay a fine of Rs 50,000.
“Say, a person wants a ticket for Lohardaga, but by mistake, my staff at the counter issues one for Muri. The customer will demand and get his correct ticket and leave. But the headache of submitting the wrong ticket to the railway authorities at the station before the next noon will fall on me,” Dwivedi said.
He added that if he didn’t return the ticket on time, he would have to shell out a hefty Rs 50,000 to the railways as penalty, no matter how cheap the original ticket was.
When contacted, Arjun Mazumdar, assistant commercial manager of SER, said they would set up a new ticket counter somewhere near the railway station.
“I will also ask Dwivedi to remove the signboard,” Mazumdar said.
For now, with the closure of the centrally located Kutchery kiosk, one has to trudge all the way to Ranchi station and queue up to buy general or unreserved train tickets.
Indian Railways IRCTC online train reservation facility is valid only for reserved tickets. Being a netizen won’t help if one has to buy a general ticket.

As part of the plan to protect railway tracks and prevent encroachments on its property, rail authorities have decided to construct a 7km-long wall between Bhopal railway station and Habibganj railway station at a cost R1.5 crore.

Commandant of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Bhopal Vijay Khatarkar said, “A wall would be constructed on both sides of the tracks between Habibganj and Bhopal railway stations.

It will help to protect railway properties and prevent several untoward incidents. The budget for the project has been sanctioned and work is expected to start soon.

The wall would first be constructed in areas which are considered security threats,” he said.

Recently, 20-year-old Poonam Soni was run over by a train while crossing the track near Kasturba Nagar.

Several people cross the railway tracks daily between Habibganj and Bhopal railway stations especially near Kasturba Nagar, Rachana Nagar, Subhash Railway crossing, Barkhedi and Aishbagh. At numerous occasions, they are run over by approaching trains. The RPF has failed to put an end to this menace.

Often, anti-social elements put stones, iron rods and electric poles on the tracks. “Once the wall is constructed, anti-social elements would not be able to sabotage the tracks.

It would also help the RPF to protect railway properties,” a senior railway official said.

Several slums have come up adjacent to the railway tracks near Subhash railway crossing, Barkhedi and other areas. The shanties have even covered the railway signals as a result train drivers face problems while crossing this section. “If the wall, which is estimated to be 6ft-tall, is constructed from both sides, the people would not able to develop shanties near the railway track,” said Vijay Khatarkar.

However, railway sources said as of now with the first phase of construction, the railway authorities will not meddle with the existing encroachments but will carry on the work at places which are still under the possession of the railways.

Ludhiana:
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Manish Tewari has written to Railway Minister Malikarjun Kharge seeking his intervention in the completion of the foot bridge at the Ludhiana railway station.In his letter, Tewari wrote that the work on the foot bridge had been started on his initiative a few years ago. However, the Railways stopped the work midway without giving any reasons.Seeking an inquiry into the abandoning of work on the foot bridge, he said, “It should be found out why the work on the foot bridge was abandoned and how much money was spent on it before the work was stopped”. He wanted to know why the project was cancelled and whether any penalty had been fixed and what action had been taken in this regard.Emphasising the need for early completion of the foot bridge, Tewari wrote, “Ludhiana is one of the important cities in Punjab with a lot of railway traffic. The new foot bridge is needed urgently as the existing one is narrow."

Jammu:
The Jammu-Udhampur rail link remained closed for the third day today. The route was shut down after a major landslide caused by heavy rain destroyed the track near Tunnel-16 (T-16) between Manwal-Ramnagar on Tuesday. The Manwal tunnel was damaged. The route takes more than four days to get repaired.RN Meena, Divisional Traffic Manager, Jammu said, “The work is in progress and the track will be hopefully restored by tomorrow, all the trains for Udhampur from Jammu have been cancelled but rail traffic to the rest of the country is through."“The engine of the Malwa Express, which was stuck into the debris, has been removed this morning and Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) is inspecting the repair work. It may take another day, but we are trying our best to clear the track by tomorrow," he added.There are seven trains for Udhampur from Jammu, Malwa Express, Jammu Mail, Uttar Sampark Kranti, Summer Special and three DMU's. All these train have been affected due to the landslide.

This line is an important link for Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (JUSBRL) Project to connect Kashmir with the rest of the country. Construction of the rail line was the biggest project undertaken by the Indian Railways in the mountainous terrain which runs through some of the mountain ranges of Pir Panjal and Himalayas.

SANGRUR: Sangrur MP Vijay Indersingla on Sunday early morning flagged off a passenger train at Dhuri railway station for Bathinda. The passenger train will pass through Barnala, Tapa, Rampura to reach Bathinda in 2.25 hours.

Vijay Inder said after being elected MP from the Sangrur parliamentary constituency, I had consistently raised the demand for Introduction of new trains services, extension and increase in frequency of existing services.

Train no. 54765 Dhuri- Bhatinda passenger train would start from Dhuri daily at 4.00am and reach Bathinda at 06.25 am via Barnala,Tapa, Rampura Phul. On its return journey, the train no. 54746 would start at 7.35 pm and reach Dhuri at 10.15pm.

यहां से बरेली व मुरादाबाद होकर ट्रेन सुबह 10:10 बजे दिल्ली पहुंचेगी। ट्रेन में शयनयान श्रेणी के 10, एसी तृतीय व एसी द्वितीय कम्पोजिट की एक, एसी तृतीय की एक और एसएलआर श्रेणी की दो बोगियां लगेंगी।

इसी तरह 14 अगस्त को एसी स्पेशल ट्रेन 04208 नई दिल्ली से शाम 7:30 बजे रवाना होगी। गाजियाबाद, मुरादाबाद, बरेली, शाहजहांपुर, हरदोई होते हुए ट्रेन 15 अगस्त की सुबह 04:45 बजे लखनऊ पहुंचेगी। रेलवे 11 अगस्त से 23 सितम्बर तक डिब्रूगढ़-चंडीगढ़ साप्ताहिक स्पेशल ट्रेन चलाएगा।

Two bogies of a goods train carrying oil to Mumbai from Gujarat Refinery derailed at Vadodara railway station today, briefly affecting the movement of trains on Mumbai-Delhi route.Nobody was injured in the mishap, that caused large amount of oil spillage on tracks this morning, police said.Meanwhile, Vadodara BJP MP Balkrishna Shukla has demanded a probe into the derailment."About 1.30 lakh litres of oil spilled over the tracks and surrounding areas because of the derailment. It is a very serious matter and guilty should be punished," he said.Gujarat Refinery, located at Koyali on the outskirts of the city, is owned by Indian Oil Corporation.

Kangra (Himachal Pradesh) Aug 11 (IANS) Traffic on the Pathankot-Jogindernagar narrow rail gauge line in Himachal Pradesh will remain off the tracks for at least 10 days due to landslides along the track, a railway official said Sunday. "Traffic was suspended Friday as heavy rain in region had damaged the track at a number of points between Guler and Kangra towns," assistant divisional engineer (Northern Railways) M.K. Goel told IANS. He said the damage to the tracks was greater near Kangra. The 165-km-long rail track from Pathankot in Punjab to Jogindernagar in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh was once proposed to be declared a UNESCO heritage site. Railway officials say trains have been playing normally between Pathankot and Guler in Kangra district; beyond Guler, traffic has been halted for repair work. In March last year the rail traffic on this section was restored after seven months of closure. At that time, the 84-year-old railway bridge on the Chakki rivulet had been damaged in flashfloods. The bridge, initially constructed in 1928 when the Sanan hydel project in Jogindernagar was set up, is the only bridge connecting Pathankot and the picturesque Kangra Valley. The British had laid the Pathankot-Jogindernagar line in 1932, linking the prominent religious towns of Kangra and Mandi districts of the hill state. Each year, a large number of tourists ride trains on the line to take in the scenic beauty of the Himalayas

ALLAHABAD: Sleuths of GRP (Government Railway Police) were successful in nabbing four criminals involved in stealing goods of passengers and committing loot on the trains. The miscreants were arrested from platform number 7/8 of the Allahabad railway junction on Sunday. Many items of looted luggage along with tools used by them for stealing were also recovered from them. Cash worth around Rs 5,000 were also recovered from them.The arrested culprits were identified as Naseem alias Vicky of Adarshnagar, Satna, Vinod alias Manoj of Civil Lines, Satna, Ashish Kumar Gupta of Kolmawan, Satna and Rakesh Kumar Soni of Kolgawan, in Satna district.A mobile phone stolen from a passenger was also recovered from them. According to GRP sources, the gang was involved in theft and loot cases on the trains passing through Satna region. Many cases of loot have been registered against them at the GRP of Satna station. However, some months back they had shifted their base to Allahabad region.
