After changing the location of the ladies coach on trains running on the Violet Line, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is now planning a similar exercise on the Mundka- Inderlok/Kirtinagar (Line-5) to facilitate boarding and alighting of women passengers. Starting Thursday, women passengers using metro trains from Inderlok/Kirti Nagar towards Mundka will find the ladies coach at the end of the train. However, those travelling the other way will continue to find the first coach reserved for women.

Elias George, MD, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) said that the Kochi Metro will change the way the city is being perceived by outsiders and it will prove to be a lever for reinventing the city.This will also lead to the integration of all forms of transportation in the city, which is a basic condition for the project sanction.He was addressing the KMA members on the topic ‘Make Over for Kochi City’. He pointed out that there are plans to set up two townships in the city including Muttam and Kakkanad.The next KMRL board meeting will discuss about the consultancy of the project. The consultancy will be selected based on their international reputation.The townships will have facilities for housing, trade, entertainment and employment opportunities. As part of encouraging pedestrians, footpaths will be constructed at the township.There will also be facilities for cycling and gathering of people. An idea box has been  created on the website of the Kochi Metro to enable the public to post their suggestions.According to Elias George, the idea box will help in creating an idea bank of experts in this field. Though some of the Metro rails are not running on a profit, the branding of the cities will bring in more investments.There are plans to link the townships with waterways available in Kochi. The timings of Metro, water transport and buses will be linked enabling the passengers to use these mode of transports without waiting at each station.

For all the mode of transport, one ticketing system will also be introduced. A project will be submitted to connect the water transport with Metro to Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Vypeen areas, he said.

The Minister of Railways Shri Mallikarjun Kharge has called upon all Zonal Railways to ensure ‘Zero Tolerance to Accidents’ on Indian Railways. In his message to the General Manager of all Zonal Railways, Shri Kharge said “Safety culture is essential for any organization to achieve good safety results. With sustained efforts in the last decade, Indian Railways have reduced the number of accidents per million train kilometers from 0.44 in 2003-04 to 0.13 in 2012-13. Further effort is required to make Indian Railways free of accidents.

Jaipur Metro, the youngest metro in the country, is all set to usher in a new era in public transport in Rajasthan. It also has the distinction of being constructed in shortest period of time.The trial run of the ambitious urban transport project is expected to begin by the end of this month.  Keeping in tune with the time and a vision to provide a comfortable mode of travel to the commuting public in the city free of congestion and traffic jam, the project opens the doors for world class travel aspirations of the people in other cities as well.The Rs 9732 crore project will prove to be a milestone in the history of the state in mass transport. The state that once used camel cart for public transport has seen rapid strides in travel and transport over the years.  It has been making steady progress in road, rail and air travel but metro rail would stand out as a special gift to the people of the pink city which is growing leaps and bounds. The project was launched as part of making ‘Jaipur a world class city’.

The 9.7 km-long first phase of the project that is nearing completion is an east-west corridor. But as tunnelling through the congested old city would have delayed the project, it was subdivided into phases 1(a) and (b). The 9.5 km phase 1(a), comprising an elevated track stops short of entering the walled city. Phase 1(b) will be taken up thereafter, an underground stretch of 2.3 km.

Fastest construction

The agreement for the project was signed on August 5, 2010, with a target of June 2013, leaving the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation which is implementing the project with just 34 months for planning, survey, award of contracts, construction and commissioning of the line. Officials say work on this corridor is being completed in a record time of just over two years, the fastest construction of any Metro system after the one in Mecca in Saudi Arabia.

Targeting a ridership of two lakh passengers per day by 2016, Jaipur Metro promises to fill the public transport void in the city. According to its estimates, Jaipur Region, with its present estimated population of 4.45 million including an employee population of 15.55 lakh, has a travel demand of 36 lakh passenger carried every day with 3.6 lakh during peak hour.

A subsequent North-South corridor will form the second phase, a more ambitious project proposing to connect 23 km of the city with 15 elevated and five underground stations having an estimated cost of Rs 6583 crore. The project is proposed to come up under a public-private partnership, for which financial bids are under way.
Jaipur Metro cars have been specially designed and manufactured by Bangalore’s Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) for the standard gauge line.

The Metro cars  are indigenously designed and developed for smooth riding comfort of passengers. One train-set consist of four cars with a total capacity to carry 1314 passengers at a time.

The BEML has been given contract for manufacturing 40 cabins for the first phase at a cost of Rs 500 crore. The cost of one cabin is estimated at Rs 12.5 crore and each train comprises of four cabins. An important feature of Jaipur Metro is that the coaches are considered much superior to the ones made for other metros in collaboration with foreign companies. Two trains have already reached Jaipur and rest are under construction. Currently, the static and dynamic testing of the train is underway at the Mansarovar depot before the trial run begins by the end of this month.

With only a partly finished signalling and telecommunication system, the first 9.5-km corridor will be initially operated as a “single train system with line side signals.” JMRC chairman and managing director Nihal Chand Goyal said,  “We want to ensure that the benefits of the project reach the commuters at the earliest. In such a big project it is not possible to have it completely ready at one go.”

The Congress-led government views it as a trophy project and obviously wants to take credit for it in the election year. No wonder the Ashok Gehlot government wants to inaugurate it before the election code of conduct comes into force for the Assembly elections in November, 2013.

Incessant rains in western Rajasthan today caused breach and inundation of rail tracks disrupting train services near Sanchor and Samdari in Barmer district. Normal life was thrown out of gear due to heavy rains in Barmer, which received 270 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, official sources said. Sand and ballast was washed away in about 500 metres near Sanchor in Barmer at 7.30 am, North Western Railway (NWR) sources said. Two passenger trains, Barmer-Haridwar Express and Delhi-Barmer Malini Express were delayed for over three hours due to the breach, they said. Railway tracks were inundated at Samdari on the Jodhpur-Barmer route, due to which the Jodhpur-Bhildi Passenger was stopped for a couple of hours, they said. Sand and ballast were washed away from underneath the tracks at several places between Bamsin-Rakhi railway stations in Barmer district yesterday. Though services were resumed yesterday only, trains were running at slow speed along the stretch, NWR officials said.

South-West monsoon was aggressive over western divisions of Jodhpur with Sindri in Barmer recording a maximum rainfall of 200 mm followed by Jaswant 160 mm, Bheenmal and Baresar 140 mm and Abu Road 110 mm, a MeT department official said.

Monsoon will be aggressive in north-west parts of the state in the next 24 hours, a forecast said.

INDORE: On the eve of Independence Day, Railway Police Force (RPF) beefed up security at Indore and other nearby stations. Security check at parking stand, general coaches and other places with heavy footfall has been increased.Indore RPF office in-charge Mukesh Anandkar said that the dog squad has been making constant rounds of the parking lot and general coaches. On Wednesday morning, vehicles and major parcels were checked with metal detectors. Besides the CCTV scrutiny, manual photography and hand videography are also being done, especially inside general coaches."The security check will continue till Thursday afternoon. RPF personnel are also patrolling in civil clothes at various platforms. Dustbins, parcel office and parking lot are being thoroughly scrutinized," he added.Security check arrangements are being done at Rajendra Nagar, Dewas, Fatiabad and Laxmibai Nagar stations as well.

Southern Railway will conduct a heritage run of the 158-year-old steam locomotive, EIR 21, which is the oldest locomotive of the Railways, from Chennai Egmore to Guindy in connection with Independence Day on Thursday .The train will leave from platform No.4 of Chennai Egmore at 11 a.m., halt at Kodambakkam station for 15 minutes for public viewing and arrive at Guindy around 12.15 p.m. — Special Correspondent
