| Mafia | Railway timetables in short supply, Chennai touts make a killing on : August 18, 2013 - 11:58:48 AM |
CHENNAI: Southern Railway released the new timetable for EMU and express trains on July 1, but the revised copy is not available at ticket counters at Chennai Central and other suburban stations across the city. In absence of sales at the railway counters, touts are reported to be selling the timetables to passengers at an increased price. While a copy of the time table can be purchased at 15 at a regular counter at a station, the price in black goes up to 50. Many passengers complain that they are forced to wait for long hours and that some of them even miss the train in the absence of the timetable listing the new timings. S Velmuthu, a senior citizen said, "I couldn't find a single copy of the timetable at the stations. As I don't have access to the internet, I am forced to call the railway enquiry numbers every time to confirm the train timings," he said. Mohan Ram, a member of the divisional rail user's consultative committee, said that some of the railway staff were purchasing bundles of new timetables and distributing them to their friends and relatives. This has resulted in a shortage of time tables, he said. "However, we have requested the Divisional Railway Manager to print additional copies and we hope that it will be available by the end of August." |

CHENNAI: Can diabetes and a blood sugar level of 140mg/dL be cited as reasons to deny employment to a person? No, the Madras high court has said, adding, "There cannot be a blanket ban on giving public employment to persons with diabetes. Medical experts opine that diabetes is a condition where the body fails to utilise the ingested glucose properly. Further, there is a strong school of thought that a diabetic is not suffering from a disease, but only a disorder that could be managed." Upholding a Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order rejecting the railway administration's claim that a diabetic might not be able to discharge his/her works efficiently, a bench of Justice R Banumathi and Justice T S Sivagnanam said, "It is unfair on the part of the railway administration to reject a candidature on a single blood test." Manikandan, a commercial clerk in Southern Railway, died in harness in 2010. His wife Arockiammal applied to the railways for a job on compassionate grounds. In 2011, the railway administration informed that she was unfit on medical grounds, as her blood sugar level was around 140mg/dL. |

Bengaluru: Plans for the metro phase II, which envisage a 72-km metro line, has finally left the drawing tables. Soil testing to determine areas for the corridor is about 80% complete. The BMRCL has also identified a total area of 180 to 200 hectares along with about 2000 properties that need to be acquired and demolished so the new line can be constructed. In keeping with the plan, the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) will acquire the identified properties in a phased manner. Compensation structures for acquired properties will be evaluated according to the Public Works Department’s (PWD) schedule of rates, which will be determined according to the market value of the property. The BMRCL also plans to bring in private real estate consultants to study the market value of the land. However, the final decision will be made by the BMRCL land committee. After facing several issues and delays over land acquisition, the BMRCL is now planning to expedite the process. “The only way to curb delays in land acquisition is to begin acquisition process earlier” BMRCL MD, Pradeep Singh Kharola had told Deccan Chronicle recently. The soil test, meanwhile, is to explore soil strength and erosion. The testing is being done for the Gottigere-IIMB-Nagawara metro line, an underground stretch that requires extensive soil and rock testing activities. |
