Expressing profound grief over the loss of innocent lives in a railway accident in Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav on Monday asked the Indian Railways to provide a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh and jobs to families who had lost their loved ones.Yadav said over 30 people have lost their lives in this tragedy, and added that the death toll is expected to rise.“It’s sad and heart-rendering news. Approximately, 30 people have died, the death toll may rise,” Yadav told media here.“We demand that the Railways give Rs10 lakh compensation and jobs to members of families of victims,” he added.At least 35 people were crushed to death under the wheels of Saharsa-Patna Rajya Rani Express at Dhamahra Ghat Railway Station near Saharsa this morning. The death toll is expected to rise.The victims mostly pilgrims were standing on the railway tracks at a station in Katyani Sthan, a religious stopover, waiting to board another train when the train hit them.

The injured people have been rushed to the nearby hospitals in Saharsa. There is complete chaos at the accident site as agitating people were holding protest against railway officials in the station.

NEW DELHI: Against the backdrop of changed political equations in Bihar, BJP on Monday joined RJD and LJP in slamming the Nitish Kumar government over lack of relief and rescue measures after a rail accident in Khagaria claimed several lives.As soon as the Rajya Sabha met for Zero Hour, Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP) and Ram Kripal Yadav (RJD) were on their feet saying, "Thirty people were killed by Rajyarani Express from Saharasa at Dhamara Ghat this morning but no rescue and relief measure has been initiated after 10 hours of the mishap by the Nitish government which claims good governance."Both the leaders were soon joined by BJP members who stood on their feet, holding Bihar government responsible for the accident.Responding to members' concern, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla said, "The House is saddened over the accident. Minister of Railways is being contacted to apprise the House at the earliest of the steps taken so far."Earlier, Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said, "government should come out with statement."Paswan said despite claims of good infrastructure, the condition of roads was such that no relief measures could reach the spot, for which he held the state government solely responsible.Yadav joined him blaming the Nitish government for "anarchy" there saying the railway station has been set ablaze and situation was serious.

Ravi Shankar Prasad and Rajiv Pratap Rudy (both BJP) also blamed the Bihar government for the situation.

Train services have been suspended on the route following the accident, officials said.

At least 35 Hindu pilgrims were killed and over a dozen injured Monday when they were run over by a speeding train in Bihar's Khagaria district. Angry locals and pilgrims set ablaze six bogies of the train, brutally assaulted its driver and took several railway officials hostage.Additional Director General of Police S.K. Bhardwaj confirmed the death of 35 Hindu pilgrims (Kanwariyas) when the Rajya Rani Express train mowed them down while they were trying to cross the rail track at the Dhamara railway station on the Saharsa-Mansi route of the East Central Railway (ECR).The death toll may increase because detailed information is yet to come from the accident site, he said.The train was travelling from Saharsa to Patna when the accident took place between 8 a.m. and 8.30 a.m. The express train does not have a scheduled stop at Dhamara station.

"The accident took place when pilgrims were trying to cross the railway track after alighting from a local train," he said.

Soon after the incident, angry pilgrims and locals set ablaze six bogies, including one AC coach, of the train and attacked railway officials.

"Some angry people attacked the train driver and seriously injured him. They beat him up mercilessly. Besides, some railway officials have been held hostage by them," a police official said.

Bhardwaj said top officials of the district administration have been asked to rush to the accident site.

Chief Public Relations Officer of ECR, Amitabh Prabhakar told IANS over telephone from Hajipur, the railway headquarters near Patna, that the situation went nearly out of control at the railway station following the incident as hundreds of angry people began agitating.

"The railway officials are not in a position to visit the accident site," he said, adding that there was a lot of "confusion".

"It is difficult to say any thing exact for now. It will take another one or two hours to say anything concrete after security forces are mobilised to clear the agitating people," he added.

In the month of Shravan (July-August), thousands of Hindu pilgrims visit a temple in Deoghar, Jharkhand, where they offer holy water from the Ganga river to Lord Shiva at an ancient temple.

Kanwariya pilgrims in Bihar collect water from the Ganga in Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district. They carry this holy water in "kanwars" (a single pole, usually of bamboo, with two water pots dangling from opposite ends) and cover 105 km on foot to reach the temple.

After offering the holy water, they return to their native places in vehicles or trains.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief at the incident and asked railway officials to launch rescue operations and arrange proper treatment for the injured.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today expressed grief over the train accident in which 35 people, mostly pilgrims, have died and scores of others (have been) injured in Bihar's Khagria district.As soon as the Chief Minister got information about the train accident at Dharmara Ghat station on Saharsa-Mansi sections under Samastipur division, he immediately spoke to the East-Central Railway General Manager at Hajipur to find out the details and directed that rescue and relief works be launched  to contain the number of casualties, officials said.The ECR General Manager informed the Chief Minister that a rescue train from Barauni with essential relief material has been rushed to the site of the accident to undertake rescue and relief works.

Kumar further directed the Saharsa and Khagaria district authorities to assist the railway administration in rescue and relief works which were already underway as per the latest information reaching the Chief Minister's office in the state capital.

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister AkhileshYadav today exuded confidence that the ambitious Lucknow Metro Rail project, to ease traffic and transportation problem of the state capital, would start in time.On the occasion of the release of 'Development Agenda of UP 2013-2014', the chief minister said, "After the Lucknow project, which is a priority of the state government, projects for other cities would be taken up." Yadav, who was presented the model of the proposed project, also said the funds for the extension of metro in Ghaziabad has been arranged.Principal Secretary of the Housing and Urban Planning department Sadakant said details of the project were being worked out diligently so that the first phase of the Rs 6,757 crore project could be started by the targeted date of December, 2013.All efforts are being made to obtain necessary approvals and financial sanction from the Centre, he said, adding that operations are expected to commence in December, 2016.A modified Detailed Project Report (DPR) had been approved by the high-powered committee headed by the Chief Secretary, Sadakant said.The constitution of the Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) is underway with the memorandum and articles of the association having been prepared, he said.To expedite the work, an interim consultant is required to prepare detailed designs for which two specialist agencies -- RITES and DMRC -- have been asked to submit proposals, the Principal Secretary said, adding that the interim consultant would be selected by the end of this month.

DMRC is working on the depot design for north-south corridor of the first phase, he said.

The underground portion of the north-south corridor had been reduced from 7.5 km to approximately 3.5 km from Charbagh to Hazratganj, Sadakant said, adding that 22 stations are proposed in the first phase, out of which 3 stations are underground and 19 elevated.

An estimated 6.45 lakh passengers will use this corridor in the year 2020. The peak hour peak direction traffic (PHPDT) of this corridor is estimated to be 20,976 in 2020.

One rake would consist of six coaches with a passenger carrying capacity of 1,574. Initially, the train will run at an interval of 7 to 14 minutes but with the increase in traffic, the interval will be reduced to 2 to 4 minutes. Ads by Google

खानपान संचालकों ने किया था विरोध - अवैध वेंडर रख कर रेल यात्रियों को लूटने में माहिर जबलपुर के खानपान संचालकों ने इस जारी होने वाली वर्दी का जमकर विरोध भी किया था. लेकिन अधिकारियों के दवाब के आगे उन्हें झुकना पड़ा.
अवैध वेण्डरो पर कसेगी नकेल - अभी तक खाकी बर्दी में हर तरफ नजर आने वाले वेण्डरो को ख़ुद अधिकारी भी नही पहचान पाते थे. लेकिन नई ड्रेस पर अब सिर्फ वैध ही वेंडर रेल्वे स्टेशन पर नजर आयेंगे. जिसके कारण अब यात्रियों को अनाप- शनाप ढंग से वेंडर नही लूट सकेंगे. क्योकि रेल्वे ने ड्रेस के साथ पश्चिम मध्य रेल्वे का लोगो भी ड्रेस में लगाया है. जिसको लगाना अवैध रुप से जुर्म है.

Railway police today arrested 42 passengers for travelling on roof of trains or in female coaches. "The drive was launched after we got complaints of misbehaviour of male passengers in female coaches. Today at Dadri railway stations around a dozen local passenger trains including were checked by a team of railway police and 42 persons were arrested and fined," Sub Inspector Yogesh Singh said. The drive will be4 conducted regularly at different railway stations on the route, he said.

New Delhi: Despite concerted efforts by Indian Railways to prevent accident on rail track, the number of persons killed due to trespassing is on the rise.

While 12,894 people were killed on track and level crossings due to trespassing in 2010, the next year witnessed the toll going up to 14,611, according to a Railway data. There were total 8,412 people killed on the track till June 2012, as per the data. Thirty-seven people were killed in Bihar on Monday while crossing the track at Dhamra Ghat station.

"The awareness campaign to educate road users for negotiating level crossing is a constant exercise," said a senior Railway Ministry official.

While Maharashtra has maximum number deaths (1356) due to trespassing followed by West Bengal (1049) in 2012, there were 228 deaths in Bihar.

In Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, the casualty figures are as high as 996 and 819 respectively in 2012.

However, there is a decline in the number of deaths in train accident in the recent past. While 45 were killed in such mishaps during April-August 2012, the casualty came down to 42 for the same period this year.

Maximum number of accidents takes place near level crossings. Railways have 31,254 level crossings across the country out of which 12,582 are unmanned.

"We have drawn out an action plan to eliminate all unmanned level crossings in a phase manner," said the official.

Steps are being taken in coordination with the state governments to eliminate 9,808 unmanned level crossings in the 12th Five-Year Plan, he said.
