ALLAHABAD: The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination was conducted successfully at numerous centres in the city on Sunday. About 36.3% candidates appeared in the examination which was conducted at Allahabad and Chandigarh.

There was heavy crowding of the candidates at Allahabad railway junction as they set out to return to their native places after appearing in the examination.

Talking to TOI, RRB chairman Sanjeev Mathur said about 17,940 candidates appeared in the first meeting of the examination in which 46,656 candidates were expected to participate. In the second meeting, about 17,166 candidates appeared in the examination out of the 46,656 candidates. Meanwhile, 11,224 candidates appeared at Chandigarh out of the total 35,136 candidates.

The written examination is being conducted for selecting candidates on the vacant posts of commercial clerk, accounts clerk, ticket examiner, junior clerk and train clerk.

There was heavy rush at the numerous examination centres right from the morning. Some of the candidates faced problems in going to centres which are located in the far-flung areas.

This examination is being conducted in three phases. The second phase and third phase of the examination will be conducted on September 22 and October 6.

Railway administration has made arrangements for ferrying the candidates. In this connection, two extra general coaches were attached to train number 12403/12404 Allahabad-Mathura Express and train number 11107/11108 Gwalior-Varanasi Bundelkhand Express.

The new Thanjavur-Chennai Egmore Uzhavan Express was flagged off from Thanjavur Railway Junction on Sunday amidst high drama as cadre of the AIADMK and the DMK turned up in large numbers with their party flags and raised slogans to claim credit for the introduction of the train.

As R. Vaithilingam, Minister for Housing and Urban Development, reached the stage, the AIADMK cadre surged forward and some of them climbed over the loco. Some cadre of the DMK too followed suit.

The AIADMK cadre even placed a portrait of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in front of the loco. Soon S.S.Palani Manickam, Thanjavur MP, came to the stage and the train left at the scheduled time.

The train that fulfils the long-pending demand of the people of Thanjavur for a direct night train chugged out of the platform at 8.45 p.m.

The train will reach Chennai Egmore at 4.55 a.m. on Monday. “The train is running full with 750 reservations,” said railway officials.

The train has 17 coaches out of which nine are sleeper class, one AC two tier, one AC three tier, four general second class, and two second class-cum-luggage.

The train will stop at Papanasam, Kumbakonam, Aduthurai, Kuttalam, Mayiladuthurai, Sirkali, Chidambaram, Cuddalore Fort Junction, Panruti, Villupuram, Tindivanam, Melmaruvathur, Chingleput, Tambaram, and Mambalam. Manjula Rangarajan, Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi, participated in the function.

V.Jeevakumar, adviser to Train Passengers Association of Thanjavur to Tiruchi, said that the train would be of much use to the people of Thanjavur.

“It has been rightly named - Uzhavan Express - signifying the importance of the Cauvery delta and its farmers,” Mr. Jeevakumar said.

A.Giri, vice president, Thanjavur District Railway Users Association, suggested that the train’s departure from Chennai could be advanced.

It leaves Chennai Egmore at 11.30 p.m. and reaches Thanjavur at 7 a.m. “This could be advanced so that the train may reach Thanjavur early,” Mr. Giri said. Thanjavur now has three night trains to Chennai - Mannai Express, Rameswaram Express, and Uzhavan express- and Cholan and Thiruchendur express trains in the day.

Rockfort Express that had been providing the link to Chennai for Thanjavur and Kumbakonam people for 11 years is being run from Tiruchi from Sunday.

MARGAO: The Konkan Railway police on Sunday seized 488 helmets which were brought to the state on Goa Sampark Kranti Express for being sold illegally. The helmets didn't bear the mandatory ISI mark and had been transported by railway without proper billing, police sources said.

PSI Dattaguru Sawant of the Konkan Railway police said that a decoy customer, who was sent to inquire about the helmets on platform 3 of the Margao railway station, confirmed that the headgears were meant for sale. The Konkan Railway police then swung into action and seized the helmets, all worth 1.95 lakh, Sawant said.

Samsher Alam and Mohammed Ibrahim, both residents of Azadnagar, Margao, were arrested .

Palakkad: Ahead of the 2014 polls, the UPA government is moving ahead with another big-ticket rail project: A rail coach factory at Palakkad in Kerala.

“The request for qualification (RFQ) for the Rs.600 crore project will shortly be invited. We also expect to begin the process of shortlisting the bidders within this fiscal,” Railway Board chairman (CRB) Arunendra Kumar told.

The Pallakad factory has long been mired in political controversies despite the Kerala government — nearly four years ago — having offered land free of cost to set up the factory.

“All the issues have been sorted. An inter-ministerial group comprising officers of the ministries of finance, law and railways – as well as the planning commission – approved the draft RFQ for the project earlier this week,” Kumar said.

The factory, to be set up in three years, will have a capacity to manufacture 400 state-of-the-art aluminium coaches annually. It is planned as a joint venture with the railways contributing 26% of the equity.

The LDF government led by VS Achutanandan had acquired 430 acres for the project in 2009, which it had offered to the railways — provided the facility was built as a public fund and not as a PPP project.

As the railways plans to build the factory under the PPP mode, it has now purchased 239 acres from the Kerala government. “The state government had initially offered 430 acres free of charge,” Pallakad MP MB Rajesh said.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Government has granted sanction to construct a railway overbridge near Erode Station at a cost of Rs.40.16 crore. Since the Railways has expressed its inability to construct a new bridge to replace the existing one, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has sanctioned the construction of overbridge with State Government funds as it would connect traffic from Tiruchengode and Pallipalayam to Salem, Namakkal and Erode districts, an official release said. The railway overbridge would come up between Sankari Durg and Erode railway stations.The Chief Minister has also granted the Government’s administrative approval for constructing bridges in Thanjavur district at a total cost of Rs.36 crore, it said. Administrative approvals have been given for constructing a bridge between Thanjavur Town and Alakudi railway stations at Rs 29 crore and another bridge across Keezh Vennaru river at a cost of Rs seven crore, it added.

Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Hon’ble Minister for Railways flagged off a new          Train No. 16572 Bidar-Yesvantpur Express (Tri-weekly) at a function held at Bidar Railway Station today ie.,  1st September, 2013. Dr. N. Dharam Singh, Hon’ble Ex. Chief Minister of Karnataka & Member of Parliament; Smt. Umashree, Hon’ble Minister for Women and Child Development, Kannada and Cultural Department and District Incharge Minster and a host of other ministers, MLAs, MLCs, other public representatives, dignitaries and senior Railway officials were present o­n the occasion.

Addressing a huge gathering o­n the occasion, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Hon’ble Minister for Railways stated that this new train is a very essential link between north Karnataka region and capital city of Karnataka. It was introduced by according top priority as it would provide a comfortable travelling facility for the people of north Karnataka towards Bangalore. He said, Indian Railways is committed to develop Railway infrastructure across various regions of the country to meet public demands. He also said that the sanctioned Railway projects in Karnataka will be given due priority for their early completion, with the active co-operation / cost sharing from the Government of Karnataka, including Bidar-Gulbarga new railway line project.

Shri Dharam Singh in his address said that Shri Mallikarjun Kharge’s initiative to provide much awaited overnight train service to Bangalore is highly appreciative. He also said that it was a long cherished dream of Bidar region, as at present there is no convenient train to Bangalore. Earlier Shri A.K. Mital, General Manager, South Central Railway welcomed the gathering and detailed o­n developmental works taken up by SCR. Shri S.K.Mishra, Divisional Railway Manager, Secunderabad Division proposed vote of thanks.



On its regular run, Train No.16572 Bidar-Yesvantpur Tri-weekly Express will depart Bidar at 18:25 hrs o­n  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and arrive Yesvanatpur  at 07:40 hrs o­n the next day. In the return direction, Train No. 16571 Yesvantpur-Bidar Tri-weekly Express will depart at Yesvantur at 19:15 hrs  o­n Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and arrive Bidar at 09:30 hrs o­n the next day.


The composition of the train : o­ne AC III tier; o­ne AC II tier; o­ne AC First cum III tier; five General Second Class;  six  Sleeper Class and two Second Class Luggage cum Brake Van coaches, totaling to 16 Coaches. Enroute, this  train will stop at Zaheerabad, Vikarabad, Seram, Malkhaid Road, Chittapur, Nalwar, Yadgir, Narayanpet Road, Raichur, Mantralayam Road, Guntakal, Dharmavarm, Hindupur, Gauribidanur and Yelahanka stations.

DMK worker dies

Raja (38), a DMK cadre from Keelavasal here, died after he fell off the loco of Thanjavur-Chennai Egmore Uzhavan Express that was flagged off from here. Raja was one among the party cadre who climbed up the loco with party flags. He fell off the loco and suffered injuries. Later, he died.

Auto-rickshaws blocking the entry-exit points, congestion, honking and complete chaos — it's a common sight outside all major Metro stations in the capital.

But soon it will become a thing of the past.

In a move to decongest the area outside key Metro stations, usually blocked by auto-rickshaws parked illegally, the Delhi Traffic Police has asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to construct U-shaped strips, or lanes, for auto-rickshaws at these stations and fix entry-exit points for them.

"It will be a U-shaped strip. Auto-rickshaws will enter the strip at a specific point, go behind the station, pick up passengers and exit from a fixed point. It will not only be convenient for passengers to board auto-rickshaws but will also decongest the area as auto-rickshaws will not occupy other road space," Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla said. "In the new Metro stations that are coming up, this feature is part of the construction plan," he added.

For the project, the traffic police has identified 35 Metro stations. The move comes after a survey was conducted at 19 stations, including RK Ashram, AIIMS, INA, Inderlok and Kashmere Gate. It was observed that drivers usually park their auto-rickshaws outside the entry-exit points and block the way of moving traffic. Although the traffic police book these auto-rickshaws for illegal parking daily, the problem has only got worse outside the stations.

In order to lay out the special strips for auto-rickshaws, the PWD, along with the land-owning agency, will only have to carry out minor changes such as removing some dividers, levelling the land, closing or opening new gates and removing encroachments, police said.

A PWD official said, "The maintenance department is carrying out the project. It is a part of retrofitting work across Metro stations."
